I have a M38A1 and it has a Jerry can on the back and I want to put a lock on the can with the price of fuel these days Im sure its only a matter of time before some lowlife tries to take it . I have seen a strap simalure to the straps that secure propain tanks in RVs in the past in place of the webbing strap thats there now they go over the top of the can. What do you guys use ? I want it to look nice so I want to avoid the tow chain and paddle lock any suggestions ?

they those things that go around your luggage, although your not allowed to use them anymore (maybe they'll be easy to find at yard sales and such), you know the straps that have locks, im sure someone could cut through them, but it would be a deterrent, only problem is the only ones i've ever seen are rainbow colored

How about a thin, plastic-coated piece of aircraft cable and a padlock? Any good hardware store can cut it to length and put the crimps on the ends to make loops, and you fasten the ends to the Jeep, running the cable through the handle of the can. To keep folks from leaving the can alone and just siphoning the gas out you can tack-weld a single chain link onto the spin-on cap and put the lock on that. Don't ask me who, but someone on here had tis setup and IIRC it solved his problem.

This is the type that we have always used. They used to be real common, but I don't know maybe that can't be found now. I would think that they would be easy to make with some metal strap. I think you can get the locking latch at a hardware store. If not, then a guy could get one of those cheap tools boxs and use the latches off it.
