after taking off the carb and valve covers i noticed rust at the bottom of the rods, the rod look fine, just rust collected in the bottom below teh valve cover, should i bother taking the rest apart or is the engine shot? should i bother looking in to spending a 1k on a rebuild kit or just get a transplant?

one more little tid bit i figure im gonna wrench on it some tonight and when im undoing the head bolts i know i have to start on the ouside and basically wrench one turn on each so it doesn't warp the head does anyone have the proper order, should i follow the firing order?

The only time you need to worry about head bolts is when you are tighting them you start from the inside and work your out when you unloosen them it does not matter.
I wouldn,t say the motor is shot just by that if the motor sat for a bit it is just a bit of condensation not biggy just make sure put a bit of WD-40 or other penatrating oil in the cylinders and change the oil a few time in the first couple hundred mile you should be fine.
Really alot more info is inorder to know if the motor is in good shape or not.

Agree- Mine sat for 10 - 15 years w/o being started. Similar surface rust on rods. The first thing I did was completly fill the block with diesel fuel and let soak for a month. No suggesting a month was really needed but the point is to lube everything well and see what happens.
