Can somebody confirm my math please?
I've assumed all along I had a 5.38 gearing, but being able to do 60mph w/o overdrive got me thinking I should check. 2 rotations of rear wheels= apx 8.5 rotations of the driveline. My math tells me I have the optional 4.27 gearing:)
Sound right? (see what happens when ya assume )
    Thanks Jim S.

Actually for your year 4.27 would be standard and 5.38 optional. Your math seems right to me. :)

I didn't know that the 4.27s were ever standard with the F-head.

    When did that start Glenn?

My understanding is early '60s, at the same time they also lowered the 1st gear ratio to compensate for that. My manual is from '69 and it lists 4.27 as standard.

    :hurrican: : 4.27, opt 5.38
    :v6: : 3.73, opt 4.88
the trucks/wagons had more choices: 3.54, 4.10, 6.??, in addition to the 4.27 and 5.38.

Source? That's backwards from what I recall reading and there sure are a lot of "optional" 5.38s around if they really were. 'Course Glen's manual says the later ones were standard 4.27, I want to know when the change occurred because I sure thought the 5.38s were standard in the earliest Early 5s.

I've got to look at the dealer price list at home tonight when I get the chance, it's mid-60s. Couple books I need to dig out and read through.

My manual won't be any good, it's for a Jeepster. R)

Wow, 4.88s were optional on the :v6: Jeeps? Wonder what the odds are of my 69 having them? Hopefully I'll make the trek up to Atlanta in the next few weeks to get it.
