It is time to rebuild the steering column. i pulled out the column today and the bottom bushing is non existant. and the top bearing is there but loose. My question is, who has repalced installed bearings for the bottom and top to repalce what is there? If no one, does anyone have a bearing book that could crossreference OD's and ID's of bearings so i can get a set that will work for my column? I know if need be i can resue the top bearing, i originally cleaned it and greased it but it needs it again.

Also how was the copper strip that is onthe inner shaft for the horn attached? My copper piece was stretched much larger than the inner shaft so i electrical taped the shaft to make it thicker and slidthe copper over it but the tape has since given up the ghost and i need a differnt way to put the copper on there so maybe i can get the horn to work.

If you find a good solution let us know. I have looked into it a little bit, and my normal parts guy said the rebuild parts must be made out of unobtainium as he couldn't find any, but I know there has to be a source out there somewhere.

I guess i will head to the bearing store on tuesday and see what they can get me for my dimensions. hopefully the bearings wont be super expensive since they will be smaller. I do have to make a large washer to put on the bottom of the column when i bolt it all back together, i had an issue in Uwharrie with me pulling up the wheel and pulling the inner shaft out abotu 2 inches. Fortuanetly the ujoint on the bottom kept me from pulling it out allthe way :(

I recall from years ago that Mike made some of those bottom end bushings ...

here is a parts book pic.
It appears the sleeve/bushing floats on the inner shaft and makes contact thru the brush contact mounted on the underside of the tube.

Thanks Jim!!! I found those pics earlier. So i guess i will not try to attach the copper sleeve at all, except for the wire i will solder to it and let it float :)

Here is a CAD drawing of the bushings I made for the 72-75 intermediate column.
