How often do you adjust your valves? I know the FSM says every thousand miles but wanted to see how often you actually do it. I've got about 2400 on a rebuild. No problems, smooth idle. Having never been around these motors the valve train sounds noisy to me but might be normal.

valve train will have the sound of a solid lifter, because thats what it is,dont know on how long to go before adjustment,1000 miles sounds often to me,maybe on the first go around after a build this wouldnt be too bad, i would pull the valve cover and check them anyway, thinking around once a yr when i get mine built

I think I've done mine about every 3k. Haven't ever really tracked it. Usually I won't notice anything, mine tighten up so I don't get any more noise, and it still runs smooth. But I do notice a touch or more of power in the motor after I set them. Only one time have I let it go to long, and had a major loss of power, and did a lot of cussing and scratching before I figured it out.

I just rolled over 6k since a total rebuild. I kept after them pretty well up to about 3k and adjusted them several times but once the new cam got settled in I found they didn't need it. Probably won't look at them again until about 10k.

Yeah, you need a Factory Service Manual (FSM). There's a lot of places that sell reprodutions of them, do a search, it's been discussed a lot. Much better than the Haynes or Chiltons from the auto parts store.

Thanks Guys. I think I'll order some gaskets and check them one more time.
