As I'm looking through all the parts to go back in the Jeep I can see that the rear seat is now gonna be the "sore thumb" of the interior. While the seat was pretty new when I got SSDutch, it's badly stained (TX calliche I'd bet). I've scrubbed with every chemical I have and nothing touches it.

I caught sight of some upholstery paint the other day at Autozone - and it got me to wondering if that would be an approach to freshen it up again.

    Anyone tried painting vinyl seats?

    Edit: Here's some stuff:

Mike, I've used SEM vinyl dye with pretty good results. Just clean the seats really well with lacquer thinner first. I suspect the stuff you're looking at is similar.

I can't see it working very well on a seat that's gonna get bounced around in
I've seen dashes that had been painted peel the paint right off...that's with little to no contact
    YMMV

Take it or leave it as it's from the product website, but this testimonal (from a cycle owner) seemed to cover the usage we'd see:

I've used vinyl spray paint before, worked very well for over ten years. You have to scratch it pretty hard before you see whats underneath.

I've had best results from the SEM brand vinyl dye. I've done steering wheels with it using several coats. I got a few specks of overspray on a mirror once and couldn't get it off. I used a razor thinking I could scrape it off and it took some of the mirror with it.There's a clearcoat from SEM too.

Sprayed the rear seat in my CJ5 with great results. The seat was brown and painted it black with the vinyl paint. Shot three or four coats and it hasn't peeled or scratched off. My two children have abused it pretty good.

Cheaper than reupholstering or replacing the seat. I say it's worth the effort. Try it and let us know the results.

"Interior Paint" from any automotive store (AZ, NAPA). It has worked wonders on more than one set of old vinyl seats..
