Yes, and thanks (to all). My wife's dad bought this GPW in 1960 and it already had the 283 SBC in it. After he passed on, the car went through a couple of the other family member's hands and suffered. At the end, my wife couldn't stand to see the thing just go to a POS, so she bought it from a nephew.

That's went it made its way to CA and to me. It took a year to completely redo it, body off frame. I still have a few little "to-do's." Like a speedo cable. I've got the original speedo, but a Dana 20 and a T-150 trans. So, everything is a little custom. If you have any ideas on that, I'd appreciate it.

BTW, the history behind the '44 is that it was a Navy communications vehicle. It was olive drab from Ford, but the next coat was gray. The USN numbers were visible etched in the hood, or should I say, the metal around the numbers was etched enough that I could make them out.

It had numerous paint jobs. At one time or another, blue, red and then yellow at least twice. I stripped it bare. The hardest layer was the factory paint. Wonder what it was.

There's a place here in Riverside Socal that can make a custom speedo cable for you to match the t-case and gauge. I'll look them up. They made a cable for me a couple years ago. cheap, quick and easy.

Here are some Jeep part numbers for the speedo cable and lengths of each.
One of these is bound to work, just measure/guesstimate your overall length.
These should be available from any of the usual Jeep parts places.
These are all one piece cables. The cable adapter used on the D18/D20 is the same.
    535 1775 64.5" inches long
    535 1776 80 " long
    535 1777 69" long
535 1778 60" long ( most popular CJ cable used)
    hope this helps

They didn't have CARC type paint in WWII, did they? I've heard that's some tuff stuff.
