OK, I have an issue with a disk brake swap. I understand how/where to grind the knuckle for caliper clearence. But from the looks of it there is not enough there to grind away to make room for the caliper. I have a 75 Chevy 1/2 4x4 caliper. But I am almost to the bottom of the knuckle and still need about a 1/2 inch more for the proper clearence.

Is there some small variances in the calipers. Mine seems to be very large in the area that accpets the brake hose.

    The swap is on a 66 cj5 with a dana 27 diff.

    Thanks
    Scott

I will take a pic of the caliper. I am sure that is where the problem lies.

Here is th epic from my swap, I didn't need to remove all that much material but the clearance between the caliper and the knuckle is very close. You will need a flush-headed fill plug for the knuckle oil fill. Post a pic of your calipers and the knuckle and I'm sure we can get to the bottom of things.

    Here are some pics:

The first is of the knuckle area that has been ground down.

Tha second is the caliper and the large hump that is causing all of the issues I think.

The third is the caliper and knuckle together. You can see the hump on the caliper is an issue and the holes are not even near each other to bolt the caliper up.

I think I have to hunt for a different caliper. But lets hear your thoughts.

    Thanks

I'ld almost say to flip it over, but that can't be right.

Are they designated left and right? Or did the "half the age of your jeep" counter person give you the wrong part?R)

Thay are left and right. The bleeder must be at the highest point to bleed properly. They were for a 75 Chevy. I may try a few different years and see what they look like.

You need calipers from '71-'78 Chevy 1/2 ton, or light duty 3/4 ton with a Dana 44. Caliper mounting brackets should be from a '73-'91 1/2 ton Chevy 4x4. Rotors are from '77-'78 CJ, they are 1 1/8" thick.

    You want NAPA #328 (L&R).

Here is a pic of mine. (Please pardon the dust, I'm under construction right now) This is the driver's side:

The 73 and up calipers are slightly different from the 71-72 as they use a different style hose end. Same size, but without the "T" ears. I don't remember how different after replacing them on my JImmy, but at least slightly.

FWIW the calipers I'm running are from a '76 Chevy K10 pickup. You knuckles look slightly different than my Dana 25 units, but your calipers are definitely not the same as mine.

As mentioned, the bleeders need to be mounted in the "up" position. Be a nice guy and not ask me how long it took for me to realize this, K?

I agree that you may not have the right calipers. Here are pictures of mine. Yours don't look very Chebby to me. I can see that the big bulge on your caliper would cause a problem. I barely had to grind mine at all. Different calipers should solve your problem

I will add my vote for the calipers being wrong. I hardly had to grind my knuckles either. They just don't look right.

The are the corret number but will not work and are not what came originally on the Chevy trucks. I now know what I need. I am going to try the Kragen ones. Car Quest is just using different calipers for this application.

Thanks for all of the input.
