I am getting closer and closer but havn't gotten anywhere yet because I don't have any parts. I went to a bunch of junkyards today. There are a ton of Chevy trucks and S10's, GM cars (El Caminos, Firebirds, Camaro's) and only a few jeeps (Scrambler and a ton of cherokee's). Which vehicle should I go for? Please help! I want to keep my steering wheel but have access to welding.

From what I've read here and info timgr has posted I'm looking at S-10 4X4 lower steering components. I would think you could keep the original column if you can match up the shaft ends.

The S10 is gonna be a 3 bolt box. You can use any saginaw but full size Chevy trucks, ther backwards or technically left handed. The best is to find a (4 bolt mount) box off of a large GM car such as a 70's Monte Carlo, Grand prix, Catalina, Caprice, Impala, Riviera, Olds 88 or 98, Cutlass or such. As a general rule the larger the car the slower or more turns the box will have. Jeep boxes would be your 1st choice but after that use the above list as sort of a guide. Mine came from a 1973 Pontiac Catalina or Grand prix, can't remember which for sure.

I just used the steering box from a 96 4x4 GMC Jimmy, everything fit well. The only problems problems I had were the steering shaft and the lines.Make sure if you go this route to get the shaft and lines with the box.I will try to get some pictures up in the morning.

Hey strider380, doing mine on the 74 now. Don't sweat the steering box, that was the easy part. Go for the big GM cars. It will be a 4 bolt box but from what I read you can use your 3 bolt bracket and a brace for the box.

You can use the original shaft down to the box then get an adapter from there to the input shaft. Mic the end and count the splines. Goto Advance adapters or Borgeson.

I'm stuck fabing the pump bracket and lines. Do most people flip the alt to the passenger side? Is the engine tapped the same for early 70s as early 80s?

I just found a guy who is parting out his CJ7. He'll give me the whole deal (pump, brackets, box, hoses, shaft) for $150, but the seals in the box have to be replace (I've done this before). Should I grab this since it will probably be an easy bolt up, or keep looking?

One thing that I don't understand is the Chevy trucks being left handed. Every Chevy I looked at, the box is on the inside of the frame rail like any other truck.

I think on the 7 the pump is driver side and the alt is passenger. You will have adapt this to your jeep. 258? Complete setups on ebay are 100-200 so that seems right.
