Is $600 a good price for a used overdrive?

Below is a link to the auction I was highest bidder on. I didn't meet the reserve and the seller has offered it to me for $600. I can wait another 4 months to get an overdrive so wasn't sure if $600 for a used is that great a deal or not. What should I expect to pay for a used unit? I know I can get a rebuilt one for $700

    Thanks!

It is missing some parts. I think the seller is either not aware of, or deceitfully glazing over a couple important issues. It would be a fair, not overly-priced unit if it was complete, but I do not see the "bowel gear" or planetary or whatever it is called that actually slides into the t-case, not to mention linkage if you are trying to retrofit. While the seller's claim that you can put an OD on almost any D18 from the '40s through '71, you can't just bolt any OD on any given transmission/t-case combo due to spline/tooth count. There should be a big, black, cylinder looking unit that has splines on the inside and teeth on the outside. You have to match the splines to your transmission (6 spline = T86, T18, T98, T90) and the teeth to your t-case (26t, 29t). Also keep in mind that for just a couple hundred more you can get a complete unit BRAND NEW from Herm with exactly what you need and customer service to support any problems during install. I would pass on this deal if I were you. You can get a good used unit complete out of the classified section on this site from a more knowledgeable seller for cheaper. Just post a "wanted" ad with your spline and tooth requirements, and I'm sure somebody would PM you.

At the very least I would question the seller on whether or not the required gears are included. If WYSIWYG, then definitely run. Post that wanted ad. I "might" know of a seller that has an OD to fit your '71 drivetrain, if it is the stock T-14. ;) If you do have an original '71 3spd/D18, then you need a 10 spline x 29 tooth OD.

I'm positive it's all stock components for the Jeep. Is there a guide online that says which spline/tooth count fits? I'm glad you told me its the 10 spline because I had read it was the 6spline from other places. I'll post in the classifieds in just a bit. For some reason my boss expects me to get work done??

Give Herm a call before you ebay. His rebuilt units are $700 and he backs them up very well. It's hard to tell a good unit from a bad unit with internet pictures. Herm will also make sure you get the right unit for your jeep.

Famous last words! Occasionaly Herm has rebuilt units for sale too. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a used one from him. When I bought mine he didn't have any used units and I was ready right then. I bought a new Saturn from him complete for around $1,000. Slightly cheaper than dealing direct with AA. In addition to what was mentioned above there are 2 different shifter housings available also. Depending on which tranny you have, you'll need one or the other.

There is a chart I've seen floating around these pages somewhere, but can't seem to find it at the moment. I think Nickmil posted it once. I think for your purposes, just confirming that you have the T-14 and later large hole D18 should be sufficient. T-14 = 10 spline, later D18 = 29 tooth.

According to JeepTech.com.... The T-14 was used in 67-75 CJs & the T-86 was used in the late 60s. For some reason I thought I had the T-86 from previous readings. You just saved me a couple hundred bucks, hopefully Karma will go your way. Lucky Lottery Numbers are 50 17 6 32 12

Herm told me to remove the PTO cover and count the teeth. that way he could send the correct unit for my T-90/D-18 combo on my '60.R)

I'ld go the xtra 100 and buy from Herm, 'cause you KNOW you will get everything needed to install the overdrive (excepting maybe the time to do it) plus he will answer any of your questions. :?

You know how it is, 'Do it right the first time, or get lots of practice by not doing it right!'. My dad said that to me long, long time ago.:coffee: :hurrican:

One thing to add here regarding used overdrives: They are very prone to oil starvation if the owner isn't diligent about maintaining the transfer case oil level. If the oil gets low, starvation will affect the overdrive in the form of trashed bearings ASAP, and this can get expensive. Unfortunately, much of the damage shows up inside the planetary assembly, and you have to disassemble it in order to inspect it.

Having been there and done that, I'll never buy another "used" overdrive unless it comes from Herm. ;)
