I just got new smitty built low back seats. They look great and are real comfy... Bolted right in, perfect fit. Problem is they are about three inches thicker than the warnout seats they replaced. I'm too big for this thing as it is. Now my head is right up even if not a little higher than the roll bar.

is there a standard/after market bracket to lower the front seats?

I will be very interested in reading any replies. I've always had CJ7's but a friend recently offered me an '82 CJ5 for a good price. I'm worried it will be too tight for me behind the wheel. I had seen a reference to door opening modifications or moving the drivers seat in JP magazine or one of those but I can't find it on the web.

Well I'm 6'4" and a hair over 300... and my little CJ5 has been my first and only jeep. Its a little tight but not all together uncomfortable. I just need the seat to sit a little lower. Its looking like I'm going to need have a custom job made up...

I removed the drivers seat support framework and cut each support leg approx 2 inches (can remove anywhere from an inch up to two inches of pipe and replace with a collar or coupling) )and used collars to reattach. After getting everything lined back up.... we drilled and went down to Lowes and picked up some hi-grade pins with wrist buttons and drilled the collar and used the pin to resecure, yet be able to remove if further modification were necessary. Note: The other side of the collar, I tac-welded and drilled and ran a grade five (5) bolt. I used a grade-5 due to a grade 8 being a shear problem verses the grade five (5) having a higher "shear" strength. Hope this helps and was an easy modification and was accomplished at his home instead of my Shop (4X4 Offroad Innovative Fabrication, Central, Florida) Gunner (jus an ol welder at heart.... :flag:

If this was on the '72, you may be able to use the concept, but the seat brackets and floors are entirely different on a '79.

You want to lower the seat ... I'd suggest you take the bracket to a welder and have them shorten it. There also may be room behind the seat to move it back, if you relocate the roll bar. Again measure it up and have a shop bend it for you. My mental picture of the '76-on layout isn't as good as of the earlier Jeeps, but I think there's room.

If not for the wheel well that is just what I'd be doing. As is it is I'm sitting on board and bricks. I found shop that can do the welds and bends; I just need to make some time to get out there during the week to do some fitting and measuring. I'll be sure to post some pictures of the end result, though I’m not expecting much of a visual with stationary brackets.
