I pretty new to the jeep thing. I have a 1957 M38A1 that had a 1-wire alternator on it and I would like to upgrade to a 3-wire. The only problem is that i have no idea how to do it. I am relatively ignorant on this subject so I need it dumbed down as much as possible. The alternator I bought has 2 prongs on the top and then the + post on the back. Can ya'll please help me figure this out. I need specifics where each wire goes. By the way I have already searched for alternator and wiring it just seems that all of the posts are over my head on which wire goes where.:flag:

I do not have a lamp indicator, does this have to be hooked up? Basicaly what I got from the picture is that terminal 2 is just a feedback. Is this correct?

What other options do I have? Where would the other end of the resistor go to?

From what I have read a 3 wire is better. I went to autozone today and was going to get a 1 wire but i had trouble finding one. The part #s that they have do not cross reference to the ones that i have read about on here, i.e. 10Si or 12SI. If you have any ideas please let me know. I would be just fine with a 1 wire. personally I could careless which one I have.

They don't have the 10si/12si descriptors in their databases. You need to just pick your application an tell it to them.

If you have the Willys Works type brackets. I would ask the ALT fro a 1978 chevy PU Truck. That will be single wire you can get different amp versions.

if you are not using a warning lamp, then you need to wire in a diode, not a resisitor. diodes are available at radio shack dirt cheap. read here. more info than you need, but a great article.

    http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/onewire-threewire.shtml

reading all of the tech articles is a good idea if you want to truely understand your electrical system. theres a write up in there about 10 and 12 si alternators too.

I just called autozone and they said that the computer shows it being a three wire for that year of vehicle. I do not have the brackets you spoke of I made some myself that are adjustable. I am really confused here. I just ran up to the parts store and every alternator, being a one wire or a three wire has the prongs marked 1 and 2. What do I do with these connectors?
