My dad and I were replacing the bed in our 1970 CJ5, and we had to remove the gas tank to avoid a big bang while cutting, grinding, and welding. We noticed as soon as the gas tank came out that there were two small holes about 3/4 inch diameter in the floor board, immediately infront of the tank and up against the side wall. These two holes have a small plate that covers them with a wingnut attached. This allows the holes to be opened and closed at will. Does anyone know what they were/are for? There is nothing of interest under them, and there is nothing above them (except for years of dirt that prevented their immediate discovery). The only thing I can think of is drain holes. I will get pictures as soon as I can but first I have to locate my camera cable. Thanks!

You're right, they're drain holes. Gain 10 JEEP points and move forward two spaces.R) R)

I saw that on a 69' once but they were more out towards the front of the JEEP in plain sight instead of back towards the tank. I like the drain option myself.

I think one of the best features Jeep engineers ever came up with is the ability to hose out the interior. I still do that to the General as well ;)

Thanks everyone for your help. I would have never been completely sure if I hadn't asked. I am still learning a lot about this Jeep, and I am sure I will still be learning years down the road.

the original use was to add headlight fluid when that ran low.
