    I might need a new tank for my 1975 CJ5 (304 V8).

It has a skid plate, the skid plate seems to be in decent shape.

Any idea where I can get a replacement tank? The parts sites I've found don't list a stock style replacement (only for earlier or later model CJs, or larger than stock tanks for a 75). Ideally I'd like a 'kit' that has sender unit, fill pipes, strap and tank all together.

I think I'd like to replace it with a stock style steel tank. That seems like the easiest, strongest option. With plastic I'd be worried about a puncture (easier than steel anyways). Am I wrong about plastic being more prone to punctures?

Do the larger aftermarket rear tanks stick down much further than stock? Can they use the same skid plate?

Are the steel tanks easier or harder to install than plastic?

Also, any idea where could I find a replacement auxilary tank for under the drivers seat? Anyone else feel weird sitting on top of 5 gallons of gas? R)

The rear tank should be the same from 72-75. You can get a new steel one with sending unit for around $150.00 - got mine from here...

If you plan to offroad a lot - go for poly for bumps and bruises. A small bit more $$$.

I took my under the seat tank out when I replaced my floors. I've been on the fence post about putting it back. The extra fuel is a nice insurance policy when I take it way out into the sticks (304 is horrible on fuel mileage). But I loose some foot room and I'm sitting on top of a gas tank. I think it'll make it back in b4 summer though.

Call the company direct. (800) 522-1622 They are out in Iowa somewhere. The guy I spoke to was extremely nice. The 15 gallon tank was only $109 from him direct. He was actually talking about throwing in the shipping for free. Been debating on a poly vs steel tank for my 73. Let me know what you choose.

IIRC the '73-75 tank is the same, but '72 is different. The '72 has a bunch of tubes coming from each corner to the vapor recovery. The later tanks have the vapor ducting inside the tank shell.

The cork (?) pad that Jeep placed between the skid plate and the tank traps water and rusts the tank through. I'd suggest you coat the bottom of the new tank with resin or POR-15 or something to make more of a water barrier between the tank and the pad.

AFAIK only the rubber filler neck and the tank is available; all the other parts are NLA. You may be able to get the vent hose. Hang on to all the hard parts though (bulkhead fitting, filler neck) - today they are mostly made of unobtainium.

When I replaced my tank i did the same thing, but i also replaced the pad with some closed cell foam padding i had laying around. It has been 4 years now with that setup and when i dropped the skid last summer it was rust free.

The best thing to put between the tank and skid plate is nothing. Nothing doesn't hold any water or moisture, and can be washed out easily with a garden hose.

    R) Good one timgr!
I fiberglass patched my rusted original tank and lasted quite well with the rubber pad under it, but the filler neck cracked so I bought a new plastic tank with the diamond plate skid/mounting plate from 4wd hardware, seems to be working great so far, hope it is as durable as the orginal, had lots of dents and scratches on the old skid plate!
Sure has been nice being able to put more than 5 gallons of gas in the tank without it leaking!

Not sure where they are exactly in Iowa. The fax is a 563 area code.
