Manual Steering Box

    I need to change out the fluid in my steering box, and I do not see a drain plug on it....

    Is there one? I would assume that there is some proper procedue to follow, and I guess that I am not sure how to take care of that.

    Has there been some discussion on thin in the past? I can not find any with searches.

    Well, that settles it for what fluid to put back in it...but I was wondering how to get the existing fluid out.

    Like I said, as I recall there's a drain plug on the bottom.

    I didn't see that in your response the first time that I looked at it. Sorry. I will look closer at the bottom of the box...couldn't find one the first time around.

    I just remember being at Tellico while a certain yellow flat fender (w3srl) was dripping fluid all over the place after hitting a plug on a rock. ;)

    I'm sure someone else here can clarify, but I was thinking it was a square head type pipe plug sorta thing.

    Does it have water in it? Just wondering why drain it? Peace of mind?

    It would appear that I have water in it. When the temp drops below freezing....so is my steering. I litterally have to strong arm it into submition...and that can't be good on the gear.

    I will also be changing out the steering stabilizer, once I figure out what size/type it is. My local NAPA guy says it shouldn't have one, but it does.

    Steering stabilizer isn't stock but lots of Jeeps have 'em. Common addition.

    No drain plug on a Ross box, mine was the self-drain variety :D

    All you have to do is pull the side cover and it will drain out all over the frame rail. Most folks end up putting in either 140wt or replacing the pipe fill plug on top with a big zerk fitting and pumping it full of grease. Unless you re-bush the output shaft and install a new seal, I'd go with the latter.

    Oh, and for the record sparky, my bearings bit the dust and one ball got in between the sector shaft an the worm gear. When I cranked the wheel it went "pop" and the "disc" at the bottom of the box popped out of the housing. The only thing that held it together was the horn wire...

    That's what I remembered. :oops:

    Those of us with Saginaw boxes tend to forget such things. :D

    In the extreem cold (i.e. 15 degrees at night and early morning) will grease still set up rock hard....I have heard tale that it does.

    That's what happened to mine after I filled it with 140. Blew the bottom right out of it. A mechanic buddy said I should have used grease. At least I wasn't driving at the time. :shock: That's what prompted me to begin the Saginaw conversion, which is going ever..... so..... slowly......
