I know this is a very real issue if you have too many horses under the hood with big meats....My question is instead of the jeep being rear wheel drive 4x4 can u switch the gears around in the Tfer case to make it front wheel drive 4x4? Can the front end handle being the primary drive at highway speed?
The reason I thought this up is hearing about cj5's having too much engine and tire, stompin the gas and having the jeep stand on it's butt.
Also this would help with the "swapping ends in a heartbeat" in snowy weather.
Just a wild thought I dreamt up... if this should be in general disscussion, please feel free to move.

With the design of the t-case it isn't a simple swap to do what you propose. I guess anything's doable with enough fabrication though. Logical solution is to use the throttle wisely.

Hmmm. You could always do a full float conversion on the rear axle with lockout hubs, and leave the rear unlocked. Just drive around in in 4WD (FWD). I imagine you'd get some funny looks if you got out of your rig and started locking the rear hubs :) . Don't know how much the front axle would like it though...they weren't really designed for high speed use. Not sure how long your axle joints would last under those conditions.

You would definately need more motor than virtually anyone here has in a jeep to stand it on the rear bumper especially if you had say 33-35" tires. If you're talking about climbing hills and doing such you can do it with a 4 banger. As far as swapping ends in the snow settle down and drive it sanely.;)

I still am wondering why though? If you want a front drive Jeep get a Compass

Well I was talking to a guy that works at some garage in Berks county and the owner likes messin with jeeps... he built one up for a customer (cj5) with a corvette engine with some big lift and HUGE tires, the frame had to be atleast 4' off the ground:shock:
I asked if anyone has driven it yet, the guy told me the owner wanted it dummied down cause he floored it and sat it on it's rearR) which would explain why both tailights were smashed and flattened and the top of rear end of the tub looked like it was drug on the ground:shock:

And Yes as far as swapping ends or putting on it's tail...moderation of the gas IS the smart thing to do. I'm....just.....speculating.
(Maybe I should have put this in general discussion)

I get some wierd ideas sometimes and just like to voice them, sometimes their winners...sometimes I wish I'd have kept them to myself:oops:
This idea looks like I had better start lookin for the crowbar to remove my foot from my mouth (again)

I have FF w/ hubs in the rear (my Jeep, not me). Anyway, during a hub debugging session I disengaged the rear hubs and drove in 4-wheel for a day. The front tires would easily do weird things starting from a stop. Wheel hop, strange steering, etc. Wouldn't recommend it for a moment.

You’re worried ‘bout a non-issue. That guy your talk’n ‘bout may’ve had issues, but it also sounds like he was ridiculously lifted. Not mean’n to brag, but I’ve got a +300 horse motor in my Jeep and it’ll kick it sideways at the drop of a hat, or more like a poke at the throttle ;), but wheelying hasn’t happened yet. ‘Course, I also don’t do stupid stuff like stand’n on the gas and side step’n the clutch from a stop either, so ya know.

“Torque Steer”. I’ve had to gimp mine home on only the front end before and it’ll torque steer like crazy whenever you touch the throttle.

Don't worry many more to come....stay tuned for more entertainmentR)
I can dream up some winners:rofl: Unless you guy's like the discussion I'll just let this thread fade into the "dumb idea" zoneR)

When I was younger I would get my near stock jeep to lift the front wheels off the ground on the street. A 350 and a t-18, 31" radials seemed to be just right. I stopped doing ot after I broke the spider gears in the rear 44. The front tires would be off about 8 or 10 inches.

It was fun while it lasted!

A buddy bought a 69' CJ5 when I was in college. The PO had the front end gears torn out of it front putting it in low, dumping the clutch, and supposedly popping wheelies. I would imagine it was the front wheels about 2 inches off the ground but he sure did tear up a lot of stuff we had to fix. This was with a stock :v6:

I wouldn't believe unless I had seen it for myself. But back in the early 80s I watched a mid 70s cj5 with a 258 pull the front tires ~3 feet off the ground from a dead stop on level concrete. The kid that owned it bet me that it would do it. Well, he won. He put it in 2 wheel low revved the crap out of it and dumped the clutch. Like I said, I am sure many of you won't believe it as I wouldn't had I not seen it for myself.
