Going to try to rebuild my T-18 myself. It is tore apart at the machinists right now. I've got a new gasket/bearing kit from PartsMikeParts. Never rebuilt a tranny before, but after looking everything over, it doesn't quite seem like black magic to me the way an auto tranny does.

I've got a small amount of wear on the edges of the reverse idler and 1st gear teeth, but not that bad. No broken/chipped teeth, no corrosion, just rounded over a bit where they used to have a bevel. Other than that, can't find anything obviously wrong with the parts. Machinist left the bulk of the cluster in tact for me.

I've read about using the 1" wood dowel to install the needle bearings. Not looking forward to that process, but I think I can do it.

While checking out internet sources, I came across this site. Anyone experienced in this area think this is okay to use, or could recommend a better set of instructions?

I'm doing the same conversion right now. Which Bell housing are you using? My T-18 is out of a '74 CJ-5 with a straight 6. It has a 7.25" stick out, and amc bolt pattern. I'm looking for a short V-6 Bellhousing. I'm working on a 1971 V-6 (225) CJ-5. I will have a 10 spline 29 tooth bull gear left over. Intrested in a trade for your 6 spline 29 tooth gear? Anyone know the best Bell housing to use?
    Thanks,
    Pete

If you're using the Dauntless, then I think almost any BOP bell would work. Not positive, but they all look pretty much the same to me; only difference I've seen is the early years have a rounded style instead of "valley" that won't work with the later model. Your stick-out length is going to need to be somewhere in the vacinity of 6.5", though.

I probably won't have any use for a 10 spline gear. Might end up with an extra 6 x 29 gear when all is said in done. Will let you know.

not much to rebuilding these old manual trannies. Pretty easy and straight forward really. I certainly go with the wooden dowel. just tap easy and take you time. You can screw up the shims that are in there. Make sure you have them in the right. If the Cluster is together and doesn't need to be pulled apart, leave it that way. those damn synch block assemblies can be a real PITA to get the springs , poppet balls to stay while you install the retainers.

but ya, grab a hanyes manual and dive in. It's fun, edumacational, and will giv you a better understanding of how it works. Good for diagnosing issues. I had never worked on a tranny before when I pulled my T-150 apart. then did 2 more T-18's after that. Make sure your rebuild kit has the Blocking rings (I think that's what they're called, the bronze/brass rings that look like a sun). there are different size ones, so don't be caught off gaurd on that aspect. might as well replace them at this point. If you don't have nice clean beveled teeth on them, I'd replace them.

Yes, but it doesn't have pictures. I need something saying "Hey dummy, put this part here, insert bearings like this, etc." That link I posted has lots of pics, just wondering if the order is correct, technique is good, etc. Guess I will just have to dig in and see.
