The less backspacing the farther the tires will move out. Around 3.5" is normal. I run 2" backspacing on a stock 74 cj5 w/ 31" x10.5" with no problems. Just check for rub issues.

I think factory back spacing on the newer Wranglers is something around 4.75. Might check for sure. But anything less than that gonna bring the wheels outboard more.

I run 3.5 on 15" x 8" wheels mounted with 10.5-33 BFG MTs on my narrow track CJ5, although they could stand to stick out a bit more there's no rubbing & I think they look good.

Backspacing? Is that an offset on the inside on the rims?

Hey, any chance you have a frontal shot of your jeep to show overal width? Those 33x10.5 MT's will probably be my next set of tires when i wear my current ones out.

    Thanks!

A friend of mine has a 91 Wrangler and he's runing 31X10.50 Firestone Destination M/T's on 15x8 Rock Crawlers with 4.5" backspacing. He is also running a 2" Tuff Country lift. The setup looks very nice-nothing extreme, just nice.. If your son is going to run 31X 12.50's I can't say if he'll have interference with the frame with that width tires.

Stock backspacing on stock Wrangler rims is 5.5" (unless its a 2007, then I'm not sure). 4.5" would bring the tires out so they don't rub on turns, but won't add too much extra wear and tear on the front wheel bearings. For 31" tires, stock rims will work fine if you put a couple of washers behind the steering stops, 4.5" backspacing will work and look good.

3.5" will stick way out, which could be a problem if you have laws concerning tire coverage by the flares.

I believe that backspacing is measured from the outermost edge to the mounting surface on the back of the wheel. That is, lay a straightedge across the extreme back edge of the rim. (Or lay the rim on the floor, if it has no tire on it) Then measure from this surface to the mounting surface of the wheel. This is back spacing. There is also a dimension called "offset", which is the dimension from the wheel mounting surface to the centerline of the cross section of the tire.
