Dash swaps are pretty easy. Especially considering all the other civi stuff on it. I still think the tub is A1. No JEEP, battery box, large fuel tank filler, covered APU (that we can't see) etc.

The tub also has the hole in the left rear for the military trailer connector. I vote for an M-38A1 tub at least.

are the reproduction boxes made for the M38A1 battery compartments? Would be a cool mod to adda hinge and make it a cooler.. or a tool box ;)

Interesting tub! I was going to add some differences on the A1 tub not mentioned above but my computer farted twice in the middle of typing that so it probably isn't meant to be.

I vote that it was a CJ tub from the factory.

How hard would it be to cut the battery box and lid assy. out of a fubar M38A1 tub (or buy a new one), then cut out the fake lid from a CJ5 tub, and weld in the battery box? I think I'd rather try that than modifying the lid on a CJ tub.

Let me tell you it's not an easy job. My battery box cove was missing. Someone cut it out and welded a flat plate in its place. I refabed the lip that the cover fits onto. I got the cover from Merl in Texas. I made the lip from the imprint in the rubber from the cover I got from him. I didn't put the battery box back in because my heater is under there. Besides It looks too clean to be a fab job.

In my humble opinion, it is not an M38 A1. The hood and tailgate are my biggest tell tails, but also there is something else about the rear that I just can't put my finger on. Last, the battery box/tool box, cover doesn't match up.

I'll go with A1. Taillight housings are military with solid red covers instead of blackout housings. Tailgate surround appears to have been fabbed. Rear bumperettes are missing due to piece all the way across being added. Also has military seat frames. Sure seems more likely that someone would have added civilian stuff to military than the other way around.
