  2. jpflat2a

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

    another type of PTO
I recall a pic in the slideshow of a ring gear/cogged wheel mounted on the rear output/driveshaft of the transfer case; it looks like an engine ring gear, but it must be another PTO set-up
    at least, that's my guess

My '2A had that ring gear on it, but no shaft or linkage. I was told some time ago that the ring gear was to drive the sickle-bar mower so that it cut in proportion to vehicle speed...

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

    yep
    that's it
the "normal" PTO mounts where an OD would go on the t/case
this one is most likely driven off of that wheel, chain drive ?????
I've seen a pic of that set-up somewhere here before
maybe Kodiak had posted and asked about it a while back

  6. jpflat2a

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

    that could be correct Steve
I've not seen one out here...
maybe someone should crawl under one the next time one shows up at a meet/show

In this pic it appears that the sickle bar linkage comes out under the side of the jeep rather than the rear though.... Maybe if Clint can go back out to it he can take some more pics of the underside of it :)

Do you have or can you get a picture of the other end of that shaft, where it originates?

maybe used to move the jeep forward while trenching with the trencher. in the manual it states that it has hyd. forward motion. t-case in netrual, pto engaged, hydr. trans power to ring mounted between p-brake drum and output to turn d.s., heck if i'm wrong it sounds good anyway.

The 47 is doing great, the 53 is going slow. I have a dual pto set up on it that is really cool. I just need a solid bed to put on it, any ideas??

Check out Bob Westerman's site www.cj3a.info and e-mail him. He is doing research on the old flatties and has a wealth of info. that can help you out!

The only time I have ever come across the gear wheel on the TC output was with a trencher. It had sort of a clutching system that allowed the jeep to go forward by depressing a pedal on the side of the jeep.

As for that shaft on the right of the rear of the jeep in the picture, I have never seen one of those.

I have seen a similar setup on an old trencher jeep the tranny ran in gear the transfer case runs in neutral and the rear wheels ran from the PTO (a setup just like this operated with a lever under the jeep attached to the chassis) to syncronize ground speed w/ trencher. this was an old parts jeep that looked like it had been through hell. the chassis broken and Patched in several places. probablly due to extreeme weight.
