Where and how does one check for a vac leak?
From earler post's vacuum should be around 20psi?
With a timing light I an around 8deg bdc, from hei manufacture this is at the high end of optimum.
Have not done compression test yet. On my list of things.

Anyone in San Diego CA, who might be willing to help?
Not a rich man but willing to trade/compensate for time.

Not 20psi, it's vacuum not pressure. 20" Hg.

Check the manifold vacuum. Any vaccum gage will have instructions on how to check this. Get one and start troubleshooting please. If you ask for help it's considerate to take into account the advice already offered before coming back and saying "it didn't work".

Check for vacuum leaks by spraying carb cleaner (will cause the engine to slow or stumble) or starting fluid (will speed up RPM or smooth it out) around the areas you suspect of a vacuum leak.

Vacuum gage is good for detecting slight changes, BTDT. DAMIK.

My carburetor tech talk I delivered at the Fall Midwest Willys reunion last month might help.

    Yup

I would go and get a Vac gauge, it is prolly the most valuable tool for finding problems. Cheap too!

I am a machinist, with a passion for mechanical problems. This jeep, all thou, is fun it is starting to ware me down, and **** me off! The help that EVERYONE has provided to me has kept me going on a 40 year old steel tank!!!! Being about 1200 miles away from my home and ALL OF MY TOOLS is a considerable disadvantage to me! I am in the military at school untill after the holidays, so it make it hard to work on my jeep!
There will NEVER be enough away for me to say thank you to ALL OF YOUR knowledge and experence that keep me going!!!

All that I can say IS "Thank YOU"

In one of my earler posts I asked if where the EGR valve goes in to the bottom of the carb is needed and can I attach both breather and EGR valve in to a riser plate, together? With the newer carb this opening is not there and i am about to make a riser plate for my intake.

18mpg? Dang Sparky, just how much coasting down hills do you do? I get around 12. That is with an Edelbrock intake and a 600 Edelbrock/Carter 4 bbl.

Thank you to EVERYONE with all of your information. I finally had to take the jeep to a garage . . . they had found out that #6 plug was not getting any spark, #4 was fouled to the point that, even thou it was firing there was no spark at the plug, or VERY little!

    Other info:
Compression was around 120 per cylinder, if I remember what the mechanic said. Running compression was around 60, except for #4 and 6. They were 40 PSI

The HEI vacuum that I have in the jeep would firing at 45 deg BDTC at speed (55 MPH) ATTACHED and 29 deg when not attached (60MPH) before back firing back up through the carb, running like it is lean. The garage also put in an even fire cap to make all 6 plugs fire.
Also I am getting oil up through the shaft and in to the cap it-self. It will be going back to the company that I bought it from when I get back to Colorado.

In the opinion of the mechanic, there is something in side the motor that is either bent or worn out to the point that it will not seat correct, or hold compression to allow the motor to run correct.

All of the Information that was given so freely was something so amazing to me, unfortunately, I had gotten to the point in my knowledge of fixing and repairing of motors that was out on my realm of expertise. There will never be enough thanks to all that have help in posting the information for me

Sounds like you're mechanic is right. Your compression numbers are 1/2 what mine are on #4 and #6. 120# sounds right.

    Good luck with it. :)

Dumb question but how is everybody computing their mpg? Mileage off the odometer? If so, how reliable can that be considering all of the different diameter tires being used? And assuming a stock diameter tire is used how reliable is the odometer itself?

My guess is about 25% not taking into consideration differences in idling if any and the mechanical drag of the overdrive itself.
