Ryan, there's no need to make the T-15 fit a 258. They use the same bellhousing (AFAIK) and the engines have the same bell pattern. If the T-15 came from a CJ with the 304, it should just bolt up to your existing bellhousing and fit right in to the pilot bushing. Check to see that the pilot tip on your existing T-14 and the new T-15 are the same diameter. If not, you'll need a pilot bushing for a 258 with a T-15, like some Jeep trucks had.

You cannot use parts from your old transmission - they are totally different.

    Welcome from Boston!

Uh, the 258 was only used in J-trucks and Wagoneers with the T-15. The CJ never had a T-15 with a 258. What vehicle is this transmission from?

The T-15 from J-trucks and Wagoneers may have a longer input shaft, so then you'll need the input shaft from a CJ T-15 used with a 304.

    Got it?

this was the message i recieved from the guy who has the tranny

Yes its the 3 speed tranny floor shift. I got it with a 74 parts jeep, it had 45k on the OD and had been in an old wreckyard since 79 so 45k seems ok, but I did open the top to make sure and all the gears look very cherry, shaft has slight surfacing browning rust, its setup for the inline 6 but the input shaft for the 3speed t15 304 version is supposed to go right in. Ive never done it just told so. My 72 was originally a 304 and the PO swapped it to a 258, he told me it was still the original tranny only he swapped the shafts. I wish I could say more about it but thats my extent of knowledge on this one. I have it for a spare for mine but will let it go if you need it. if you drop over to earlycj5.com and ask in the forum about the shaft im sure somebody there knows how it is done.

Well, this doesn't make much sense, but it's 2nd degree hearsay so I wouldn't pay much attention to it. Several posters here have a V8 swapped into a 6 cylinder Jeep, without changing anything about the transmission. The reverse (6 into a V8 Jeep) should be the same.

A T-15 is a T-15, though the input shafts may vary depending on the installation (CJ or truck/wagon). If your Jeep already has a T-15, and this is really a T-15 (check the casting numbers), then the worst that can happen is you'll have to put your existing input shaft in the new trans.

What's wrong with the trans you have now? If it doesn't have broken gears, I'd say rebuild it. It's a really strong transmission for a 3-speed, used as the standard trans for many years in in Jeep full-size vehicles with no significant problems, with the Buick 350 and AMC 360, and up to the highest GVWRs (8400 J-20). The Borg-Warner 3-speeds are easy to rebuild, and you'll get plenty of help here.

Then somebody installed it after the fact. T-15 + 304 only in a CJ from the factory, 1972-75.

Beefy transmission though, with good ratios. Excellent upgrade from the T-14.

    Check out http://www.jeeptech.com/trans/t15.html

All the ones I've seen have had the 1307 casting number in the side, though that page says they sometimes have T15 cast in.

Glad to help. Good luck with your transmission!

If your are bent on a four speed, then now is the time. However, the T150 is a good three and has seen sterling service behind Jeeps, IH's and SBF's for years(it is a re-cased Ford 3.03). It is, as are most three speeds, fairly easy to rebuild, needing only minimal special tools.
