There is a Ramsey Winch on my 67 CJ, and the darn thing stoped working. When I hit the switch the motor clicks on and off, but it does nothing. I was reading one of the tags on the winch itself and it mentions the clutch. It says to make sure the clutch is enguaged and such... Where is the clutch on a winch like this... Its not a pto... Im confused, does anyone know about these things?

am guessing the lever is (or should be) located on the side that has the decal.

Looks like the clutch lever is missing. Service parts are still available for your winch from Ramsey.

I have almost that same winch. The clutch on mine is over near the hose clamp is yours. I sounds like maybe your brushes are shot?

I have 2 of those worm gear ramseys. One has the side pull like in Renegade II's pic the other has a lever on attached to a shaft coming out of one of the two boss's that have the grease Zerk's on them. Look on the back of the winch on the drivers side and see if the lever is missing or the shaft is broken off.

you can see where the lever goes in this pic

The lever is missing. Put a vice grip on that shaft on the right in the first pic and you should be able to shift it out of neutral

If I remember correctly, the lever was held on and in place with an Allen head set screw. The screw was located in the base of the handle and pressed itself against the shaft that you see at the rear of the winch (the shaft with the two grease zerks that people have referenced). I've read about people reaching a winch point on the trail and finding out that the handle rattled off somewhere along the trail.
I'd contact Ramsey or check their web site and contact a dealer to get a new handle.

The one I have like that is a PITA to get to move. You have to wiggle it back and forth while pulling out on it and sometimes bumping the switch for the winch motor a little in the process, and then it eventually turns a little and you can engage it.

    Damn...beat me to it...
Just like MCSCOTT said, try the clutch and rocking the winch drum at the same time. Some of the gears are cut in different directions on different winches, so what your trying to do is kind of rock the gears of their interface. It may not be a straight-in interface like putting a socket on a bolt, but may be like a ring and pinion interface.

I have a ramsey winch with a clutch handle on the drivers side. The clutch dosn't pop into neutral. Someone was telling me that there is a pin or something inside that slips out commonly causing this problem. Then I never talked to him agian. Anyone know common reasons why the clutch stops working?

Here is a pic of the inside of the clutch housing
    http://www.freewebtown.com/grinsha/ramsey.htm
I think that if the set screw in the pic is loose the clutch fork might move on the shaft. I can't remember if it is keyed to it or not its been too long since i took it apart and i didn't take a pic.

I don't have a pic of the clutch itself. It was missing from the winch when i got it and i haven't replaced it yet.

How do you get the winch open? I only see four bolts that look like they are holding it on. Is it these four bolts you have to take out?

Mine was like that, but if you twist the drum by hand a little it'll slide over. I haven't figured out how to use the thing yet, but I'll tear into it this winter.

Mine is PTO and like Grinsha's pic. The clutch fork was bent bad when I got it and I had to get a new one from Ramsey. My forks set screw had safety wire on it, not a bad idea as long as your in there. If the winch hasn't been used regularly or fogged with oil the main shaft may get surface rust or corrosion on it and make it hard to shift in and out. I rember tearing mine apart and taking fine emery cloth to a couple parts to get everything moving smooth. No problems since. The handle on mine is long, thin and steel. I set it up so it's held onto the shaft by a nut / washer and lays flat at the back of the winch. You have to stand it up and put a (captive by a small chain) lynch pin thouugh it to operate the clutch. The build date on my Ramsey is 1967 and it came off of a Jeep pickup. I'm about to pick up another one that is supposed to be in good working condition and will take pics of the disassembly when I knock it apart to get it polished.
