    I just swapped in a 78 amp alternator , 12 si 3 wire hook up .

    Question is ,
can i leave the stock amp meter hooked up , with the higher amp alt or should I pull it out and connect the wires together for the exciter hook up.
Just want to start it up and see if everything is good , eventually I am going to put in a volt meter in place of the amp gage.
    :?

    This is on 74 304

I would bypass it. The ammeter is both old and undersized for that alternator. You can put both wires on one terminal.

If it worked before I don't see any reason not to use it. A better alternator will not create more of a draw on your electrical system. Only more accessories will create a larger draw.

I would also bypass the gauge, if it only reads 60amps like my gauge does, you will be charging more than the gauge was made for. Even if you dont have any accessories, the first time you start that jeep up on a cold 20 degree morning that alt will probably go to full charge, or give someone else a jumpstart, or leave your lights on, ect.
You will love your new alt., I remember how nice it was to have headlights that didn't dim when the brake lights came on.
