I know it is not stock. Was told it was a Chevy Crate 386 Stroker. Don't know anything else. Looking at these pictures, can anyone tell me more about the engine. Can I get other pictures that would help? Also, want to identify the type of tranny, anything I can get a picture of to help. I only know it is a 3 speed manual. Reverse is up and left, 1st is down left, 2nd is up right and 3rd is down right.

It is probably an older block, I notice it has an electric fuel pump elsewhere on the jeep. I think somewhere on the back of the block it has the original cubic inch number on it. Somebody has put a lot of work into the jeep. Is it going to be a street or trail jeep?

I agree with the other posts. It looks like a 350. As far as it being stroked you can't see that from the outside. All the goodies are on the inside.:)

The PO said he had about 30k into the Jeep over a 12 to 15 year period. He only used it on weekend to go wheelin at the sand dunes in Pismo Beach, CA. I am going to use it for mixed use of street and trail. One problem I see is the amount of power it has. He states around 410hp on the dyno and I think he is right. It is a 3 speed and does 40 something in first, low 60 in second and who knows what in 3rd. I have trouble with reverse, it just goes to fast to fully let out the clutch. I am going to learn more about it. Fix safety issues and then decide if I will keep it or sell it. I got a smokin deal for it at $3500.

I will try and look on the back for the cubic inchs stamp. Any ideas on what I can look for on the tranny to figure out what it is?

Write down any numbers you see and take some pics. Someone here will be able to ID the tranny with pics.

small block chevys don't have the cubic inch stamped on them like an amc motor it will just have a number on the back of the block. look on the driver side of the block at the back where the transmission mates to the motor and post those numbers the last 3 digits tell cubic inch of the block.as far as being a stroker look at the harmonic balancer and see if it has a notch in it that will tell you if it has a 400 crank to make the 386.

If you go offroading, do yourself a favor and replace that foam air filter with a paper element. Those early "performance" filters were designed for keeping large debris out of the intake at the track. Dust and fine dirt will pass right through them. Might also check the HEI power lead. I see the stock coil ignition wire running through the balast resistor. I missed the year, so trans offerings could most likely be T14, T15, T150. Do some searching for pictures of these transmissions and compare them to the one in your Jeep.

If you look closely at the second pic, you can see the notch in the balancer, which means it probably is a stroker. It is probably something that was custom built, not a crate engine.

It is DEFINATELY a Chevy 350. Check out the location of the oil filter. If it was a Ford, the filter would be towards the front. 8)

It's a small block chevy. Doesn't matter what the cid is, in stock form it'll produce enough torque to get you in trouble in a jeep. Fuel pump block off indicates electric pump as mentioned. Edelbrock performer RPM intake and Quadrajet carb combo are very reliable. Cast iron heads with straight plugs indicate older "thick" style heads from some truck motor, which is definitely a donor. IMHO that is a good thing; they take more abuse than the thinner castings or aluminum. 1.94" valves were stock, but 2.02" valves are a common upgrade. Check your water temp sending unit, though. Doesn't look like it's hooked up; wire looks like it's grounded to the block in the pic. Delco 12SI high amp alternator. HEI. Saginaw power steering. Later model vacuum brakes. Looks like aftermarket oil pan, prolly a lot of go-fast parts on the inside.

Easy man, no concrete evidence has been posted to prove it's a 350, just that it's a chevy small block.

    go here: http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.html

scroll down to casting numbers (3970010), looks like it could be either a 327 or 350, but I'd bet 350.

I read all the posts and everyone said they were guessing what it was but if I posted these numbers they could confirm the guesses. That is all I was trying to do. It does not really matter that I know for certain what it is. Just want to document what I have the best I can.

As you can see from the pictures, the engine is not very clean. I am debating on getting steam cleaned to help identify any leaks I know I have. Anyone have any downsides or be careful tips for getting this done?

the front dress power steering pump and short snout water pump to me looks like early chebby small block.. maybe 327. although all that would bolt up to a 350 block so who knows..

    283, 305, 307, 327, 350, 400
they all look pretty much the same from the outside. i would run the casting number on the net..
