So when I went to remove my carb the front 2 bolts broke (not studs?) off in the manifold.
The back 2 were fine and the front 2 were rusted badly and twisted apart real easy. Not sure where the moisture came from. The jeep was stored indoors (appx 20 years)
See picture that I hope attached.
I got an extractor set and tried getting at the first one. No luck, rusted stuck.
What should I do to get them out? I might still be able to work on the first one. I've only used an easy out once and it was no problem.
What would be the technique for drilling and tapping?

    This engine (66 Dauntless, I think) has 2 jet Rochester A L8?
    Was this the stock carb?

One more. I removed the gas tank. I know of at least 1 pin hole (rust at the bottom). Is it worth trying to weld? could be more thin spots ready to go, should I just get a new one?
I also noticed that there appeared to be 2 chambers in the tank. I couldn't see any opening through the inner wall though........?

Sorry for all the questions.........it's just starting:rofl:

You still got a little sticking out there so that's good. First thing is to soak in penetrating oil. Hard to tell from the pic but it looks like you could get a set of vice grips on there. If so try that. Make the vice grips really tight on there, like as tight as you possibly can. Then start trying to work it. Not just one way but back and forth while you continue to spray penetrating oil in there. I've almost always been able to get broken bolts out this way.

You can also try heating it up and doing the same thing. If this does not work and you need to drill and tap I would take the manifold off first. You don't want to get a bunch of metal down into the intake.

Not moisture, exhaust. :) It's corrosive.

Plenty of metal there to drill/tap. I'd put in Helicoil myself to avoid mods to the carb base due to larger bolts.

    Thanks,
Been spraying liquid wrench on them for a couple weeks.
I tried vise grips first.........didn't work so I drilled and tried the easy out.
I will try on the other side.........If I drill them out, do the holes go all the way through to the inside of the manifold?..........Looks like I am going to be taking it off. I didn't want to do that till after I try an initial start-up.
    What about the other questions?

As far as the holes going all the way through with the manifold the answer is USUALLY no. With the gas tank I would personally replace it. It can be fixed but if you have one hole now you'll probably have more later. Plus you probably have a lot of junk in the bottom of the tank. If you go the route of fixing it I know a lot of radiator shops do this. They can clean, repair and test for you afterwards.

Sorry I don't have an answer as to whether your carb is stock or not.

Once you have exhausted the vice-grips/stud remover avenues, you are pretty much down to grinding off/drilling out the studs and re-tapping/heli-coiling what is left.

IMHO, what a machine shop charges to do this job is a pittance compared to how much aggravation you will endure, as well as never having a job done as well as a professional can do. A manifold is easy to pull, you can shop around for a good price on this kind of work. ;)

Yes, a machine shop would make quick work of those. They'd probably even clean the manifold for you.

If you don't get a good answer about the tank, post it again in it's own thread.

As far as the gas tank goes I would look for a new one. If you have 1 pin hole more will be coming. The tank has baffles and that is what you are seeing.

Yeah I figured on taking the manifold to a machine shop....... if I can't get them to back out, just don't want to throw too much money at this thing before I know what I'm up against.
I guess I can still bump it over and check compression.....

As far as the tank goes, the inside looks to be in good shape, no rust or gunk. There was no cap on it and it had about 20 rocks in it......? Maybe kids, squirrels, rats, who knows.
The rust was on the bottom as there was alot of crap stuck down below and against the sides. I could easily see any potential bad spots.......is there any kind of epoxy that could be "painted" on?

eastwood has a gas tank sealer kit. I do not how well it would work with holes in it. After you weld the pin holes up then seal it.

I have had pretty good luck with welding onto broken off bolts. Here is a picture of the rear xfer case mount I just did last week. If you have a mig welder give it a try. I would not try it with a stick welder.

Thanks for the info........for about 50.00 more I can get a new tank, probably just go that route.

Do not have a mig welder.......sure would be handy though.

A 110 wire feed and weld the a couple of nuts to the studs. This works about 95% of the time. Might weigh the cost of a cheepie welder against the machine shop.

They weren't studs, they were bolts........which seemed strange to me.
I got a pretty good hole drilled through one of them already.
As much as I'd like a good excuse to buy a welding rig, I don't think this is it.
I am going to opt for the pros.......or I might remove the mainifold and try to helicoil myself.
    Thanks!
