Now that's thinkin outside of the box. I like it! Assuming you don't have any emissions concerns to deal that would be cool.

I never thought I would say this, that might be too short of a drivetrain R) I say measure it and if the shifters will come through near the floor go for it.

Front axle will need to be a passenger side drop.
To my way of thinking there are better setups out there for the YJ.
Small block whatever and a D300. With the D300 you can clock it to fit either drop.

No need to go V6 on a Wranglier - plenty of room for a V8 or inline 6. The 225 is nice for the ECJ5 because it's very compact.

Caddy 472/500 fits fine into a Wagoneer, and they are usually cheap. Relatively small exterior dimensions for the displacement.

Modern diesels are lighter than the classic boat anchors like the 4BT and Perkins - would be some work, but maybe the Libbie diesel?

6.5 gm turbo diesel weighs less than Powerstroke and Cummings. Enough stuff out there to help make good power can use Chevy V8 conversion(engine mounts adapters etc.)stuff made for Wrangler IIRC. I'd use the DB2 IP on it so no worrying with a computer. Gear it right and get great milage. And it's been done before by some so info is out there on it. Supposively easy as swapping in a SBC.

    :iagree:

But I am waiting for the boat anchor from Don, M38a1diesel

A V6 OF or EF with FI (or carb) would be neat also. There are enough adapters for a V6 one could use any GM trans and a TC with the drop on the pass. side. I think it could be done fairly easy.

Man if I was gonna do a retro and thought about a diesel I would go with something like a 4-71 Detroit. Who cares about weight the darn things got torque out the wazoo @ a low rpm to boot. Besides have you ever seen a 2 stroke diesel in a Jeep? That would be way cool, especially if you had the blown version whining away as the motor spooled up.
What about one of the big block GM v6's from the early 60's that were used in a pickups?
Here is a picture of a 351 cubic inch v6, they came with sm420 4 speeds attached.
