Picked up this tailgate w/chains from member ringmangs1, the guy here in my town that's parting out that '56 CJ5. It's in really sweet condition, so are the original chains. I won't say how much I paid, because he's still selling parts, but I hurried right over before someone else could snatch it up! He's got something else I want, but I ain't tellin' about it. Yet.

    Swap?

[Hint: That's EMT on the bottom where the hinge pins are...There was not much original metal left...]

Your find confirms that the chains I have are original (but a bit the worse for wear!)

    Great find...

EMT? You mean EMT electrical conduit? I guess that would work...

I need to get closeup photos of the chains. The hook isn't straight, it has a definite tweak off to the side so the point of the hook faces away from the tailgate, and there's definitely right and left side hooks, they're mirror images of each other.

OK, he's sold all the rest of his JEEP, so I can gloat over the price now. Sixty bucks for this cherry tailgate and the chains, whattya think? I don't think I got hurt any.

That is so clean...my chain hooks had bends in them also must be that way from the factory.

Yeah, they're pre-bent, definitely a left and a right. And besides the hook and the split link on the end, there's 11 regular links in my chains. I have no reason to think they're not originals.

Nice gate but you'd better get it away from that Chevy before it catches the rusty disease.R) Great score, I must admit, I have some strange addiction to these tailgates. I have 3 in the garage that I hope to use someday but, it's okay if they just hang there for a while.

That's a great deal! The repro's are $150 plus shipping. Plus you'll have more fun cleaning it up and stuff and at the end of the day you have an original.:)
