What are the pro/cons to an oil bath air filter? My 66 CJ5 still has it, was considering going to a straight air filter.

It's cheap to clean. Nothing else to buy. Just drain the old oil, clean the
dish, fill w/ oil to the level, and your done. I'm still using mine.

Moses Ludel in his "CJ Rebuilders Manual" recomends keeping it. He seemed to think it was actually more effective at keeping crud out of the engine than a paper element filter. Only con would seem to be the mess of cleaning it.

The last thing is that it is made to be splash proof. So a little water wont matter. as long as it's not submerged it should run fine.

I was in the same boat and just got done cleaning it out top to bottom. Flushed the steel mesh out and then ran kerosene throught it as recommended to leave an oily residue and prevent rust of the steel wool type membrane. It decided to replenish with SAE 20 weight oil since the cold air is already settling in up here and I hope to have some fun in the snow. Here is a great link I found on here to clean it.......

I'll vote to keep it too if you can.... I had to run a paper element because when I was wheeling on steep climbs the oil would run out of mine and down the fire wall. This was on a V6 with the carb mounted filter......
