    You're there, they're sheep. ;)

It looks fine to me though. You're call IMO. I'd probably do it "while I'm here" you know?

Eh, it's easy. Just line up at TDC, dissemble, reassemble. :)

Oh yeah, the timing gears have marks on them. Just line those up.

New chain and gears should come with a little sheet of directions. They are really fairly simple to replace. You can always ask if you get stuck although it's a good idea to have a repair manual for your Jeep if you don't already have one. Make sure you get new chain guides too if the chain doesn't come with them.

    Good Luck:)

    shrug
    I'd probably run it
    someone has changed it sometime
    steel gears
    tensioners look good
new chain would most likley stretch that much in short time anyway
    your call, your Jeep

When (and if) you change it, be prepared with a gear puller. The top (camshaft) gear is pressed onto a hub and requires a puller to get it off. I'd change it for peace of mind and they are inexpensive. Also worth checking the fuel pump eccentric and distrib drive gear while your there.

If you get lost - you know where I live - it's really a piece of cake. Get the things lined up and before you button it up I can come take a look if you want.

    Re: Timeing chain advice

I would replace it. The asm is considered to last max 50k and repeat process. The post about the puller is right. I did not need one for my project the upper pulley came off easily. While looking at it you cannot tell that the upper pulley installs on a sholder on the cam. also be careful with the harmonic balancer. Use a puller and installer. I welded a fine thread nut to a bolt that would thread into the crank and used my bbc balancer install tool. need pix of mod lmk I will e-mail you one. The crank bolt is very large and I did not have the right size installer so I made one.
Also be careful when aligning the balancer with the keyway on crankshaft. The balancer will install a little before keying up. I used a scribe and a straight edge to lightly score the crank to make shure the balancer would line up. I hope this helps. chris

Incidentally I didn't need a puller for my timing gear on the camshaft, either old or new.

Chris, what are you talking about a harmonic balancer installer? I just slide mine on and tighten it down to torque specs. I don't recall the FSM mentioning something like this.

The balancer on mine was tight and I had to use a puller to get it off. Reinstalling with a installer was habit. To install a balancer with a hammer is possible but not a good practice. The thrust bearing will incur all resistive force and not have a backup. If you strike it hard you may decrease the life span of the thrust area. In the case of jeep's they are all manual tranny and the thrust area is used every time you drive. Sorry for getting so technical but I have seen some trashed cranks and thrust bearings from a over zealous balancer install.

The balancer on mine did need a puller to remove it, the timing gear on the cam as I noted, did not.

I didn't use a hammer to install the damper either... Like I said, I slid it on and tightened to torque specs.

No problem getting technical, it is a tech discussion. Good explanation and forewarning.
