    The guy I bought the jeep from said to check the 1" backspacers periodically because they can loosen. Well, I just did and now I need new backspacers :(

    Three lugs were stripped on one of the backspacers studs and two snapped off when I tried to remove them with my four-way. That rim was also missing two of the five lugs holding the backspacer on! It was loose and now I need to clean the jeep's studs. The other side (frnt) was also loose and one lug stripped out the backspacer stud. I assume if the were loose the nut would ride and strip out the stud.

    Are any of the backspacers better than others as I definitely need them with 31X10.5 inch tires. Is there anything else I should know or consider before I buy a new set?

    Thanks gilly

    Not sure you would need them. I was running 31x10.5's w/ the stock
    springs. I just recently replaced them w/ +1" taller then stock. But with the
    orginal springs on I didn't have any problems.

    I looked closer at the studs in the backsapcers. Started to hammer on the stripped and busted ones. I thought they were not pressed but turns out there are so I am going to grab some new studs today and all should be well.

    I did mount the tires/rims yesterday without the spacers to see if in fact I did need them. When you turn the steering all the way the tire lugs are into the front springs- these are aftermarket black steel cragar brand rims. I wish the guy I bought it from would have known about buying the correct backspacing on the new rims to eliminate the spacers. Looks like I am stuck with them for now as both the rims and tires are new and will be around for quite sometime.

    You can adjust the stops so they don't rub on the springs.

    Don't be too hard on your PO -- even tires on wheels with the "correct" backspacing will rub the springs.

    The spring rubbing is considered harmless. Both my brand new Jeeps with stock tires and wheels rubbed a little. The rears will rub the inside of the rear wheel wells too (when one wheel is stuffed and the other hanging). Again, normal and harmless.

    Since the wheels are off, what's the backspcing of these wheels? I don't know what's proper, but someone here will. You may want to ditch the spacers.

    When you re-install the spacers, use Threadlocker on them. I've never had mine come loose. I'd use the Semi-Permanent type.

    Stock backspacing is 3-5/8 IIRC. X2 on adjusting the axle stops.

    I do like the tire/rims out further as for looks and it probably handles better. They still are well within the flares and the flares are only three inches out from the body. For now I am going to use them and see how it goes with some threadlock. I am not sure what PO means and I haven't looked at adjusting the stops but it is probably more than I want to get into right now as I just bought it and want to actually drive it around some before the snow flies. It is beginning to remid me of an old snowmobile up here which you ride for half an hour and work on for four.

    PO = previous owner.

    Adjusting the turn stops is a 5 minute deal, 20 if they are rusted -- it's essentially just a bolt sticking out of the knuckle behind the wheel.
