Bare (painted) metal is good, carpet bad. Carpet will hold water and moisture and you got rust. Carpet is not for Jeeps. If anything, lineX or Rhinolining

Ya, I wasn't too keen on the carpet idea either. Thanx for the Rinolining idea, didn't even think about that.

Wow. There's a lot of negativity re carpets here.

I had the indoor/outdoor carpet kits in both my CJS, and would not have gone without them. It's true that they hold water, but the carpet kits sold then (in the 70s) snapped in and out, so if they got wet you could remove them.

The main advantage to carpets is reduction in noise, and they feel much better on your bare feet (I like to drive barefoot, esp. on the way back from an expedition).

You can get custom molded carpets or mats for a CJ from ACC www.accmats.com I just ordered new vinyl mats for my truck from them, and we'll see how it goes. The padding that comes with vinyl mats is jute, but I plan to substitute with closed-cell foam or rubber flooring.

Unfortuantely I'm not much of a carpet fan either :( I thought it was a pain to deal with cause it always rains in here in the NW, plus rusted the floors out. I made a cut out using those floor pads for shops (look like puzzle pieces). EZ in and out + clean, reduce noise and don't look half bad.

Not a fan of carpert in Jeeps. Even with a tight top, they leak water like a sieve around the doors. Carpet holds the water & promotes rust. My floor pan is pristine, NO RUST & NO CARPET. It would feel nice between my twinkies, however, I have decided to just tough it out.R) R) R)

good paint or rhinolining is great that is what i plan to do to mine. there is also a great sound deadener i could recommend. the rubber mats that cattle ranchers use to keep cows from slipping around in their haulers. it is available at tractor supply and other ranching supply shops (if there are any of those near syracuse, ny). i really kills that sound and it is comfortable on the tootsies too. it works best for the back seat though as it is very thick and you would not want it to interfere with you foot pedals up front.
