as a lot of you know I just picked up a 71 w/ 225 and T18. She grinds real bad going into 1st and reverse, but all other gears feel really solid and sweet. Does this mean tranny rebuild, or could it be the homemade clutch linkage that is using a pulley and cable system..The clutch feels really good however even though it is a wacky homemade setup

Because if stopped it should go in reasonably if the clutch is fully engaging, while tranny gear grinding would be while moving?

Others can correct me if I'm wrong, but 1st gear is not synchronized on the t-18. When I go to shift into 1st (from a stopped position), I push in the clutch, put it in 2nd then up to first. This usually stops the grinding, the same goes for reverse. By putting it in a syncronised gear first, the grinding is minimized.

Yep, you either need to push in the clutch and wait a few seconds for the gears to stop spinning, or force the gears to stop with one of the syncromeshed gears. It's also possible that the clutch is dragging, which you could maybe overcome with the 2-3-4 synchros hubs.

Jay and Tim, my 70 was the exact same way as you describe, and thats what i would do all the time....thats not working in this case....could that "custom" clutch linkage be causing the problem? maybe not letting the clutch go in all the way??

I dont remember it grinding everytime I put it in first. The only times I remember it grinding was after I had been moving and I had just come to a stop and tried to put it in first. If I had been sitting still for a short amount of time I thought it would go in. Even after moving it was intrmitnet.. I could be wrong though..R)

That's what I was hinting at in this post. Mine did something similar when I replaced the clutch. I thought it was clutch adjustment (which makes perfect sense), but it turned out to be my input shaft was wearing a bit too much on the new pilot bearing. But, my guess is clutch adjustment.

    wreckless,

i dont remember it doing it when i took it up the road at your place either, i will mess with the clutch tomorrow ans see what happens

on a side note tim did you notice that the choke cable works and stops that initial studder problem....not sure if it works when it is completly cold, but i when it was somewhat warm it stopped it complelty...still think the carb needs work, but thats minor...other than the little things we talked about i am very surprised at just how solid this is...... i cant find any rust under it at all and it runs so nice at idle....thanks again man

Definitely sounds like clutch adjustment. Without a synchro there's nothing to help the gears smoothly mesh, and it doesnt take much clutch disc touching to spin the input shaft.

One way to check for a dragging clutch is to shut down the engine, have the Jeep on level ground, put it in 1st gear, push in on the clutch pedal and start it. If it tries to move, even slightly, the clutch is probably dragging a little. It doesn't take much with the T18 to make it grind.

I agree with Posimoto, but mine was so slight I didn't notice it until I jacked up the rear axle (both wheels) completely off the ground, and noticed the rear wheels slowly spinning while in gear with the clutch pushed in (engine running of course ;) ).

    Don't try it in 4WD!
