I have a 1964 CJ-5 with a 134, 3 sped, twin stick transfer case and 4.27 gears. What is the gear reduction when the transfer case id put in LOW?
A Rubicon is 4:1 reduced and I was thinking my drop was not that dramatic.:?

John, low range in the Dana 18 transfer case is 2.46:1

    So your crawl ratio is 2.98 x 2.46 x 4.27 = 31.30

That explains why this underpowered 4cyl jeep climbs like a mountain goat.

Mine with a t14 is only slightly better at 28.4:1, but with my sm420 to be installed in about 3 months it should shoot up to 64:1.:)

My top end is about 55 - 60 mph. 50 mph is the safest with the drum brakes.

...Is that what happened to the body on the jeep in your avatar? :)

I certainly wouldn't want to go that fast in my jeep...body probably would fall off

    6.55 x 2.46 x 5.38 = 86.6:1
That should be enough when I am done! :)

    6.55x4.3x4.56 = 128:1

overkill? perhaps, but it will be nice that have that kind of throttle control at super slow speeds on the rocks

    7.06 X 2.46 X 4.27 = 74.2

    You’ll like that SM420. 8) :driving:

This is making me rethink things a bit.....

    currently: 36:1

with teralow: 46:1 (that might be about all I would want for $600 or less)

with sm420: 84:1 (might be overkill 97% of the time for my wants, but with my OD the gearing choices would be pretty sweet, cost?, but probably well over $600 and closer to $900 by the time it is all said and done)

W/ the Terralow is where my TJ was. That was pretty nice.

SM420 would put me where I want to be. OTOH, I've had a lot of fun even without it. :)

SSDutch is at ~66:1 with the T18. I haven't played much in the rocks but not sure I'd want to go any lower - especially at the cost of top end. I'd still like an OD with the 4.27's.

I just wish the dang reverse wasn't so low -- I can skip 1st gear going forward, but I can put the clutch in and coast out of my driveway quicker than doing it under power. It'd suck to plow with...

I believe lower is better. Back in a different life I owned a heavily modified Toyota 4Runner. The crawl ratio on that was 128:1 with the help of Marlin Crawler. To be honest I hardly ever used the 1st gear in low range.

    5.15 x 5.29 x 4.70 = 128. I think now I am the same as Millner above me.
