    Hi:
I am getting ready to install new seatbelts in my 79 cj5. The factory belts and bolt holes have rusted out. I have purchased retractable belts. I have the new locations for the install. My questions is...Do I need to use the grade 5 bolts or can I use stainless steel bolts? I Live near the beach and I am trying to prevent/slow down rust. I do not plan any major off-road trips. Do they make a garde 5 bolt in stainless?

    Thanx!

Their called safety belts for a reason… Not something I’d mess around with… Just my 2 cents.

Thanks. Was not sure how strong stainless is.....
Received some info where you can put a light coat of grease on the threads and paint the heads. This would slow down the rust.

Get grade 8 hardware. The seat belt would cut you in two before the grade 8 would fail. -K-

I agree!!! Spend the extra $.50 and get Grade 8. Soak in rust preventer/paint/or coat w/ silicon. Check every year by unbolting and replace if rust starts. Don't compromise safety over a few dollars.

    My opinion.

    Thanks!
Just for the record I am not that cheap. :) Just looking for an alternative to help prevent the rust from the salt air. I just picked up the Grade 8 bolts, nuts, lock washers etc. Looks like the best way for me to go is to greas the threads and paint the heads.

I'd suggest you use anti-sieze on the threads, and get cad plated grade 8 bolts. The original bolts were irridescent cad plated. If they start to corrode, you can replace them.

Not that your cheap, I'm just a big believer in "Over Powering"/"Over Building" :smash:

Quick question, I'm thinking of changing out front seats and belts on my 74' - where did you locate your new seatbelt bolt holes?

Door side: Next to the seat on the floor. I purchased an adpater that that adds about 6" for the retractable belt section. The original belt was located on the wheel well. (The original belt was not a retractable).

For the other side I bolted latch section the section that goes up between the floor and the bed. The belt kit came with 2 1/2" washers.
