Not sure why the other one was locked. Maybe one of the moderators did it?

If it starts but won't stay running, you probably don't have the starter switch wired correctly. With the key on, there should be 12V at the coil terminal(s). When you activate the starter, the coil is energized by a different circuit (usually) so it will start. If there's no voltage to the coil with the key at on, then the engine won't keep running when you release the key from start.

You should have a cheap multimeter to test this (Radio Shack or even Harbor Freight has them). That's your most basic tool for sorting out wiring.

    Try this:
Run a jumper from the hot side of the battery to the + side of the coil, then try to start. If it keeps running when you let off of the key, then you've found the problem. Don't continue to run like this, it's for test purposes only.

Assuming this works, you need to look into the wiring instructions (or contact the manufacturer tech support) for your engine/starter solenoid set up. There should be a terminal for a wire or a jumper that feeds 12v to the coil only when the starter is engaged...
let us know if this works :)

Yes; It sounds like you have the start side wired but not the run side of the switch.

You should have two wires going to the POS term of coil, one runs to the balast res if you have one and then on to the ign sw that stays hot in the on position. The other wire will go down to the starter solenoid to the "R" terminal. This terminal only goes hot when cranking and the other becomes hot when you release the key from start to "on". Does this help?

You have a problem all-right. Not to worry tho. need some info tho. Are you running stock ign? Would remove wires from Alt/Reg and from Pos term of coil. Remove wire from starter solenoid "S" term. With the battery charged, connect your test light between Pos post on battery and the Pos cable that you removed. If the test light comes on you still have a draw and will require more disconnections until you find what is making the test light come on. LOL Note: The neg cable has to be connected to battery

Sounds as if you have a major ground problem.

I re-wired my whole Jeep and found out after that the in line brake light switch was bad. It would drain the battery over night. Something else to check.
