    Hey guys,

I have a line on a rebuilt 258 around here that seems to be a good deal, but I wanted some input here. New main bearings, the crank has been ground, new cam bearings, cam, lifters, timing chain, the head has been boiled, 3 way valve job, and it has all been painted. It's sitting in a garage and hasn't been installed or ran since rebuild.
It was not bored, did not need it.

Is 400 bucks a good price?????

If you rebuilt your own 258 to those specs, with your own labor, you'd have more than than that in it.

Is this verbal, or have you seen the receipts?
Was it ever started on a stand to assure it runs?

Sounds good if all is as you described.
    Good luck, let us know!

No it was never started. There are no accessories on it or bracketry. Just the long block. He has turned it over by hand and assures me that it was put together with lube and that there is oil in the pan. I have seen pictures and it looks really really clean.

Sounds like a good price considering all the new parts included. Were new rings installed? Engines are overbored when the bore taper is so large that the rings would wear out quickly. No overbore doesn't necessarily rule out new rings.

If they didn't overbore, then callng it "rebuilt" is generous. I would say overhauled, not rebuilt. The overbore is the expensive part becasue you have to replace the pistons.

There are 2 main versions of 258 - heavy and light. The heavy version was from 1971-1980 and has a heavier block, 12 crank counterweights, and cast iron manifolds. The light version is from 1981 on and has a lighter (thinner) block, 8 counterweights, and lighter manifolds (aluminum 2V intake). There's supposed to be about 80 lbs difference between them. Functionally they are the same, and one can sub for the other, but the heavier engine is probably better for a Jeep (heavier crank, smoother at low speed).

Used 258s aren't very expensive, at least around here. If you are looking for a used engine, I'd check your local Jeep/4WD forums. I wouldn't expect to pay more than say $200 for a used 258 in running condition. Junkyards, of course, will be much higher than private party sales.
