I'm rounding up parts for my 71 cj. I'm planning on a steering conversion and swing pedals. Can I use the parts off an 81 cj 5 for this?

Yup. Take the front axle while your at it IMO. The D30 w/ power disk brakes in an Early 5 is very nice to have. Well, if the gearing matches. If not and you don't want to regear, I'd put disks on the D27.

Like Sparky said the disk brakes are nice, the extra (roughly) 3" width also adds to the stability both on and offroad. Something else to think about.;)

You'd get a better turn radius as well.

    Thanks Guys,

Now to see if I can get the guy to come down on his price.
What's a good price on an donor 81 cj5. Condition appears to be good. The engine is out of it. 4 cyl. has cracked block.
