I'm planning a Saginaw steering conversion for my 71 CJ with Dauntless V6. I have a 231 exhaust manifold being shipped for drivers side. Would someone please send me pictures of the firewall engine side that has done a conversion with the V6 and exhaust manifold. I'm interest in any clearance issues of the exhaust manifold/pipe and the steering shaft/column. Looks like a pretty tight fit in that area.

    Thank you

    Hi Spary,

Well I can see how everything would clear in the pictured setup, but on mine the existing ross box is directly under the #5 exhaust manifold port. My steering shaft is in line with the exhaust manifold. It appears that my V6 Dauntless is offset more to the driver side than the engine in the picture.

So with the existing steering column in line with the 225 exhaust I was wondering how to clear the steering shaft once I bolt the 231 exhaust manifold on. I'm thinking I might have a tough time getting the exhaust pipe around the steering shaft. If I could see a 71 225 Dauntless with a 231 exhaust manifold pictured it sure would help. I'm thinking I might have to go to headers, unless someone shows or tells me how they worked around this area.

    I guess I don't understand what you're after. That's a V6 in an early 5 with Saginaw. :?

What's the Ross box have to do with it? It's coming out if you're putting Saginaw in.

Heck, I don't know whose Jeep that is or what year. I just thought that's what you were asking to see.

If you're thinking you'll run that manifold with the Ross steering you won't. You need another passenger side manifold. For the Saginaw you need what you ordered.

    Sorry Sparky,

I’m not keeping the Ross Box. I’m trying to figure out how to clear the steering column and shaft near the firewall once the 231 manifold is on. On my 71 CJ the engine is offset to the driver side of the engine bay more so than the V6 in the picture. Looking down at the existing 225 manifold the outer edge of it is almost inline with the inner edge of the frame(there appears to be several inches between the manifold and frame in the second picture). This makes the manifold and pipe line up with the existing steering column position if I use the 231 manifold. It looks to me that there is not enough room to clear the steering shaft.

So if someone has a picture of a 71 CJ 5 with the Dauntless V6 and has a Saginaw steering conversion using a 231 manifold reversal, I would like to see how they cleared the steering shaft with the exhaust pipe.

Ok picture might help. Any recommendations on how to route exhaust pass steering to convert to saginaw unit? Picture shows 225 exhaust manifold and ross steering column.

Here are 2 pics of how I did it. My column is from a 1970 Monte Carlo. The exhaust manifold, IIRC came from a Chevy Monza.

    Hi Hansh,

    Thanks for the pics.

So looking a your pic. it appears that you came out higher up on the firewall with the steering column and did not use the original hole. True?

Did you move the steering column to the left a few inches?

And is that a second u joint near the PS pump?

Yes the column is higher than the Ross gear. My column is tilt. The hole is pretty close to the intermediate year Jeep column location, as that is what I used for a template when I cut the firewall. I think it is pretty close left to right compared to stock.

Yes, there is a second U-joint down lower. The D shaft runs through a Heim joint for support, just about where the plastic tie strap is on the PS hoses. I do not have a good photo of it.

    Hansh,

Thank you. At first I was thinking I could use the old column and location. But now I think its time to start looking for a tilt column to use.

Was your Jeep a factory v6? If so you're motor is not mounted farther over. Take a picture of the motor mount thats welded to the frame.

That looks factory to me. I used the factory column. The fit is tight, maybe half an inch or so between the manifold and the column but it does fit. AA makes a kit that has everything you need.

71 cj I used the stock steering column and it fit perfect. The only mod I had to do was the engine mount was cut slightly and re welded, turned out nice
