    Buying a diesel CJ5 --- Added Pictures

Hello everyone. I am new to this site but not new to Jeeps. I am getting my first early CJ from my girlfriends uncles soon and this seems like the best place to get some more information about it from you guys.

The jeep is a CJ5 with a Perkins diesel, T-90, and Dana 18 tcase. It has an over drive and front and rear ptos. The current owner also says it has front and rear locking diffs but I haven’t checked. Another neat feature are two auxiliary fuel tanks built into the rear fender wells behind the tires.

I was told this jeep was built for the Colorado Forest Service but I don’t have any documentation of that.

The jeep will run but it is having problems with the generator and overdrive as well as the standard old jeep problems like soft brakes, loose steering, but surprisingly little rust.

I was hoping to get some pictures of a dash of a Perkins equipped CJ from someone on this site. It seems like this one has dozens of buttons, switches and gauges popping through the dash and I want to get an idea of what is factory and what isn’t. And if you have any advice or tips on what to look out for with this engine or drivetrain please let me know.

I'm looking forward to being an active member of this group.

    Welcome from KS.

Not much help on the dash I'm afraid, but glad you're here. :)

    Perkins-Equipped Jeeps = hens teeth...;)

    Welcome to the site.

My previous 'CJ5 was originally a Perkins, but the dash had long ago been customized. One thing I do remember from when I was a kid and my dad had it was a little plaque with the diesel starting instructions on it. I *think* it was to the left of the wheel, either up high on the dash or attached to the w/s frame.

The jeep does have that 'how to start' plate to the left of the steering column on the dash. And right next to it is a control that opens and closes the louvers that are over the grill to control the airflow into the engine.

Thanks for all the welcoming responses.

I'll try to post some pics tonight.

    Welcome from South Carolina.

I've read about the Perkins-equipped CJ5's and I've been a member here for quite a while... I think you are the first member we've had who actually has a Perkins CJ5 in his/her possesion.

Of course - we want pictures and lots of them!!! You have quite a rare gem on your hands there!

No, I can think of at least two other folks, maybe three. Not usernames off the top of my head but I know this isn't the first. So maybe one of the other guys with a Perkins will see this hopefully. :)

Well dang... Guess I need to pay better attention to the tech section and not spend so much time in the off topic section!

Welcome from Indiana. would guess that the extra knobs/gauges/etc are for the pto and the extra fuel tanks.

The Perkins is not a conversion - it's a factory engine.

I know the Perkins is a factory engine, but the benz will be a conversion.
