CJ5 Rebuild

This was my first car in high school and my dad took it back because he needed 4wd. He blew it up a few years ago and it has been sitting ever since. He gave it back to me for my 26th birthday and now its time to get it running.




My plans are to Pull the blown 258 and do a AMC 360 swap
New clutch
4inch lift
all new U Joints
33x12.5 BFG mud tires
Full cage
Repaint ORANGE

 

Looks like a very good project Jeep. And if I haven't welcomed you yet, here it is.

The 258/T-18 combo was very popular with the customers when it was new. People that had 'em really liked 'em. The 258 is an excellent motor, and can be hopped up pretty easily. They last a long time compared to some other popular motors of the day, and don't seem to have any major faults. Have you checked the hot idle oil pressure of the 360?

Just thought I'd mention it. If I were in the market, I'd much prefer the original 258.

Welcome. Looks like a great, solid project! I also like the Dune buggy in the background.
My 80 is a 258 with a 4 speed. It's a tank. It's held up wonderfully for all these years. I plan to keep mine stock, but I bet a 360 would make that thing jump.

 

Welcome from the FLAT part of Kansas. Same thing happened to me with my DAD but I didn't get it back for 35 years, and with 35 years of neglect. Oh well its been fun restoing..........rdove

The 258 was a solid motor we didnt have any issues with it.

My dad was using it to get back and forth from home to work in the winter. He would drive it about 90 miles a day and alot of freeway. The poor Jeep doesnt like going over 55mph. He needed it because his house in the moutains would get snow in the winter and his truck was a
2wd. Anyway he threw a rod on the way down to work and kept driving it for another 25 miles untill the motor froze up.

Anyway now its up to me to get it back on the road. I was going to buy a new 258 and drop it in but i have wanted a V8 jeep for some time and i figured if im going to build it what a better time than now.

I found this Waggy for $150 and a 12 pack of beer


It runs good and still has good compression.
Im also going to pull out the power stearing ,radiator and rear end for a possible axle swap later on down the road..

I am going through the same conundrum (spelling?) as you I want to start a new project; even though Red provides me with a new project every week. And I can't decide on a motor 258 or 360?? T18 regardless of motor. 360's seem plentiful but are expensive to build, and some will say the benefits are not that much greater then the 258 (way cheaper to rebuild). $150 Waggy sounds good though I would go for it!

 

Agreed:iagree: but with a halfdoller size hole in the block it will be hard to rebuild..


Just the torqe in the 360 alone is a huge upgrade. Not like you need anymore than the 258 and T18 combo but it will be nice to have..
