Hey guys, are all F head 134s quite loud in the their valvetrain? I have never heard one before yesterday, and am wondering if F-heads make more noise than L-heads.

Mine doesn't seem to be too noisey, are you talking about the Fhead whine?

An F head might make more noise than an L head due to the design. It shouldn't be real noisy though.

This one seems noisy, but it may be normal. It sounds like the valves are closing hard. I may try to record a small video clip of it to let you hear it, but I won't be back down to the Jeep until tommorow. If it is making too much noise than normal, what can be done?

someone might have tightened them too tight if they are not suppose to be really loud.

to loose would be louder IMO

You may be hearing some piston slap (not uncommon for an F head)

F-heads have an inherit knock to them, just the way they sound. But you're probably hearing the noise from too loose of an adjustment. Unless of course the head isn't getting a good oil flow. Make sure the line at the back isn't pinched/crushed.

Mine runs very well but I've always thought it was pretty noisy as well. It's also the only one I've heard running.

Can you record a short movie clip with sound of your Fhead 134 and email it to me? JEEP59@gmail.com

I just finished fixing a similar loud noise in my F head.
    It was two things:
    1) two pushrods were slightly bent.
    2) the rocker arm faces (that contact the valve) were well worn down (depressed). You couldn't set the lash accurately with the depressed face.

I bought two used pushrods and used a Dremel sanding drum to reface the rockers.
Set the lash and it is now real quiet.

But before I did all this I had to first figure out if the noise was on the top of the engine or inside. I used a poor mans stethoscope (rubber hose) to isolate the location as being on top of the engine.

When, I take the valve cover off, i'll see if has the same wear as yours firepower.

To set proper valve lash should I tighten the nut down until I cannot move the rocker and then go 1/4 turn tighter, or back it off a 1/4 turn? Is 1/4 turn right, or should it be more or less?
