Sometimes when its hot it will not fire up until it cools. Compression and fuel are all ok. It happened again yesterday after extended idle and I noticed the coil was real hot when it would not start. I couldn't see a visible spark at the spark plug end of the wire. I checkled it again when it was cold this am and I've got a weak looking spark at my coil and weaker again at the plug wire ends. But it started fine.
    Two quetions
    1) Anyone have a simple guide on how to check out the voltage on the coil?
    2) There's no ballast resistor between the hot wire lead and the coil on my jeep, should there be one?

Re: 2 - Check what the coil says. Usually they state whether they're externally or internally resisted.

Sounds like a new coil may be in order anyway.

It's the original coil. Only 40 years old and already giving trouble. Would the original coil have an internal resisitor?

BTW, did you ever put the synthetic gear lube in your trans and if so how did it work?

there is a rude and crude spark test at about every flaps i've been in. it has a spark plug end on one end with a thumb screw with a ground clamp on the other. screws in and out to find secondary voltage. never really tried using one cause i got an oscilloscope to use. also, i second the coil is shot. hth.

Nope, didn't. Doubt that I will, as I recall there's info on Novak's website about the reason not to.

Original coil would be externally resisted.

Is your motor the L head or F head , if its the F head just a heads up if you take the coil off of the motor make sure you drain the radiator because the bolts go into the water jacket and you will loose your antifreeze {ask me how I know] R)

Thanks for all the advice. (It's the F head engine) I replaced the coil and the condenser and it seems to be working fine now. I ran it all over the farm yesterday and shut it off at full temp 6-8 times and it cranked fine each time, idled better and ran much smoother through all rpms.

Just for the record Sparky, the coil for this 66 CJ5 is internally resisted and does not require an external resisitor. Guy at the parts store said failure to fire after hot was a classic coil failure symptom. But just to be sure I replaced the condenser as well.
    Thanks again,
    Eddy

I had the same problem at Windrock, it felt like someone shut the key off while climbing a long grade. McRuff came to the rescue with a spare coil out of his trail spares. Thanks Mike!
