I have had a problem with my starter motor which was chattering rather than turning the engine over. Having removed the starter ( dont know which make it is but has a actuator lever underneath the removable cover) there are 4 brushes .... two of which are connected to screws to the starter motor body the remaining 2 brushes are joined by a common wire with a central u shaped clip, but I cannot see where they are secured to provide the earth.
Can anyone advise where these two joined brushes connect?
I guess it must be to one of the secured brush leads but the clip seems to be a bit flimsy to provide s proper connection!
    Any help would be appreciated

You're on the right track... starter chatter is usually due to insufficient grounding. You may not have to get an indepth with it as you have (or as I did)... Just dealt with this on a '90 Comanche... much newer, but same principles. The negative battery cable had corroded.

One check is to jumper a bolt on the starter to the negative battery terminal (jumper cables do fine for this) and try cranking... if it cranks, then start checking all the ground cables between the battery and starter.

    Sorry for not being specific
    This is a 1971 CJ5 with 232 straight 6.
The work completed over the week end has established that the wire I was looking at was the common wire back to the field core. This had worked loose, I guess so I will now be re assembling the starter motor.
The other thing that may have caused the starter to chatter was the lead from the solenoid on the bulk head to the starter had started to crack on the insulation .... now replaced.

Peter, your Jeep has to be a '72 if it has the 232. Many '72s were delivered in late 1971, and titles/registration are frequently wrong about the year/model. I have a Jeep pickup, and my title says "body type - sedan".
