Hi, I have a jeep with some alignment problems. I checked the numbers and I have a T-14, Dana 20, Dana 44, and a 78' 258 engine. The body holes and frame holes line up fine. The engine mounts and frame line up perfect, the engine is straight in the frame. However, the center crossmember will not align with the trans. mt holes, they are off by about 2"(holes in crossmember to the right and trans to the left). The shifter is also off about 1" in the body toward the pass. side. The rear axle is angled to mate with the rear end, which may be normal but odd on some jeeps.
It would seem like I have the wrong crossmember but the 75 is unique and it is definitly it. The transfer case is only about .75" away from the frame rail, so I cannot move the drivetrain over. Does anyone have any ideas about this? The trans and driveshaft needs to move right and the shifter rod need to move left. AHHH Thanks

I'm no expert, but are you sure the '75 wasn't welded in by a PO? Sounds like all you need is to relocate the current crossmember or get a new one to put in.

I'm doing the same thing you are with a '75 but I put a 360 in the frame. When I set the engine/tranny combo in the frame, it was very evident that I had the crossmember reversed. Also, the rubber mount for the trans does'nt go directly under the trans, it's offset to the passenger side a bit. Can you take a photo of this and post it for review???

I thought the same thing and tried every possible positon for the crossmember, none would line up correctly; I also have the trans mt. toward the pass side. I wonder if someone put a crossmember designed for a 304 in this jeep. I will post some pics of this problem on Friday. If anyone has a pic of a 75 crossmember could they please post it? Thanks for the help. Rob

the crossmember for 1975 CJ is the same regardless of engine/trans combination.
your mount should look something like this

Re: the rear axle. The jeep has been lifted 2.5" so the rear driveshaft is already angled up. However, the rear output shaft on the Dana 20 is not in line with the Dana 44 rear axle yoke(side to side), which makes the rear driveshaft have a compound angle; so the driveshaft is not parallel to the frame rails. I saw a 74 that had the same side to side angle, but is this common? Thanks Rob

on my '72 the pinion on the rear axle is slightly off-set to the passenger side from center. This makes the rear driveshaft angle from the output of the t-case to the pinion. It is not straight. It was that same way before I started rebuilding it.

Thanks, thats good to know. I was hoping that was factory. Is your shifter centered in the body hole? Mine is off about an inch, maybe thats normal for jeep too..haha

I beleive it is but I swapped in a T-18a and slightly modified my crossmember and mounts to make it fit correctly.

I'd like to Hi-Jack here. I just got my crossmemeber back from the sandblaster dude and now I can't remember which side is the front and which is the rear. I can't find any pics that show the complete assembly, not even in Haynes or Chilton. Can someone help me out. TIA

Does the stadilizer stud go to the left or right? I'm having the same issues on my 74. I can't seem to get it all aligned. I did take out the 6 and put in a 304. I don't think that is the problem.
