Well my engine sat for 3 years-- and when I cranked it -- No Oil is pumped.

Guess I will have to disassemble the oil pump and pack with Vasoline--

Or has anyone removed the dist-- and used a priming shaft?
You pull the dist-- and use a keyed shaft to spin the pump with a drill motor.

You can do it with the distributor removed. I did it even with the oil pump packed with vaseline.

Hello, yes I have used a drill to turn the pump through the hole for the Distributor to prime the engine with oil. But, it the pump won't pickup the oil, then you mite have to prime it with vasoline. It would be good to change the old oil before you pump any oil through the engine and yes you should prime the engine oil gallerys before you fire it up. That way you will have a film of oil on the bearings. I take a valve cover off to make sure oil has reached the top end before I fire up an engine up that has sat for a long period of time, I figure if oil has reached the top end than every thing else has oil.

Pull the valve covers - run her up with the drill (this can be touchy depending on the amount of preasure it builds - have a good drill) and see if the rockers are getting any oil.

If you were closer, I have the rod in a box on the shelf.

I primed my rebuilt engine with this method before I fired it off for the first time. Just make sure you have all the preassure holes plugged. :D

I did not have the oil pressure guage sensor in place and shot a stream of oil across my garage as I had removed the fendors to work on it.

LOL!!!R) I did this once with the 396 big block in my '68 Chevelle. Built me a special tool to fit in the drill and I was just givin' her hell, pumping oil like a madman, until the drill started running easier, like it had lost the load.:?

Looked under the car, and I had a huge lake of fresh Valvoline Racing Oil on the floor! I'd forgot to put the oil filter on.

I assume we are talking about the 134 engine? What does this rod look like? Is it more or less like a long screwdriver cut off to fit a drill motor? :? :? :?

    hardknox00001, Buick v6 engines.

However, might also apply to a 134.

Yes-- a long shaft with an end to fit inside a slot -- connected to a drill motor to spin the oil pump with out running the engine.

I might use a junk dist-- removing the drive gear from the dist shaft-- to spin the pump.

Can't prime a 134 this way. because the gear is on the oil pump instead of the distributor. On the L- and F-heads, the oil pump is driven by the cam, and the distributor is just along for the ride. The V-6's have the gear on the ditributor, and the oil pump is actually driven by the distributor. Clear as mud?

That's right, I forgot about that. I remember worrying about the "fat" side of the flat being up while the slot was pointed at eleven oclock when installed now. :)

    Now Primed!

    Thanks for you comments==

    Well....

I took an old EF dist , took the gear off. Brazed a 5/16" shaft to the rotor mount.

Removed the Engine OF dist-- put in the gearless dist----and spun the pump with a drill motor.

Got nothing for 30 seconds-- then Struck Oil out of the open Oil port--where the oil pressure sensor mounts. Squirt Squirt--- So I stopped port hole with the oil pressure sensor-- and and spun the oil pump for 5 minutes- to circulate oil-- get some on the journals...

Next is to test run this engine. Only three K miles on it--

Here are some pics of the pump primer I made out of an old dist.
