Bikini questions?

What is the difference in the bikini tops for a CJ7 and CJ5?
    Will a universal bikini for a CJ7 fit on a 72 CJ5?
I wouldn't care if the top was wider or a bit longer.

Don't know if you would want it longer, my bikini for my CJ5 blocks a portion of my rear view. I have a top-mounted rear view mirror, and I can't see cars more than a car length or so behind me unless I crouch in the seat. And that ain't no easy task for a guy my size, believe me!

The main reason I am asking this is because I can only find bikini tops in "black" for my year CJ. I am looking for a gray one to match my half lower and upper doors.
The only one I can find in gray is for a 1976-86 CJ7 made by Bestop.
Is the length that much longer in a CJ7 from windsheild frame to roll bar top?
Any added width would be a bonus as it would cover the small gap from the top of my doors to the top of my roll cage bars.

If I had it to do over again, I would get one of the mesh ones that allow air to pass though them.

First, you MIGHT not have traffic blocked in your rearview mirror.

Second, I swear that at speed my bikini picks my Jeep up like a parachute!

Third, with some light passing throug hthe mesh, it might LOOK grey!

Seems like you could have something custom made for not a whole lot more than an off-the-shelf product.

I'm planning on one for SSDutch at some point as there isn't anything aftermarket that will work for the CJ6/custom cage. I like the mesh idea as well - so I don't totally lose the open feel, but going that route I'd likely have to buy 2 aftermarket bikinis and get them made into one. It might be cheaper to just one entirely custom made.

I'd like one that only attaches to the rollcage up front (vs. the windshield frame) as this would allow keeping the bikini on and dropping the w/s on the trail.

Looking around the Internet, I came up with these dimensions for bikini tops.
    76-86 CJ7 (WxL) 48"X60"
    55-75 CJ5 (WxL) 50"X52"

It looks like the CJ7 bikini top is 8" longer, but not as wide.
    I'll continue my search....

The width difference should be because the top of the windshield is narrower after 1975. The windshield tilts back more too, so instead of 10" (the WB difference) you get 8" difference.

I agree with the above statements. A 76 & later top will work on an earlier(it's what I got with my 73). It is not as wide though and also doesn't fit perfect on the roll bar, but still works OK, I guess.

That statement doesn't help my confidence much. :)
I don't want the Jeep to look goofy, but I've seen them for only $42 new, so I might as well try. If it doesn't work, I'll sell it.
Speaking of selling, my doors came with a Bestop strapless bikini top for 80's and up CJ's with the rear "Y" styled roll ball.
It looks like a saggy black poopy diaper on the top of my Jeep. I'm looking to get rid of it.
