Who is running an Electric Radiator Fan here?

How does it cool (esp Buick V6)?

I did for awhile. Flex-a-lite, sucker. Cooled well, but the bearings went bad in about 2500 miles. I didn't use a relay for the switch, so as it started drawing more current, it toasted my switch. I think electrics are fine if you get a quality unit like SPAL or some OEM stuff, like from a Tarus or something, but I'd avoid FlexALite or Hayden...

I had a Flex-a-Lite for 4 years or so on my DD TJ. No issues until Oakes got it from me and the clip holding the blades on the shaft came off. $20 or so later he had a new blade and was good to go again.

But then I've heard lots of bad about Flex-a-Lite too...

I've got a Permacool on mine. No issues unless I'm red-lining the engine for extended periods of time

The Taurus fan is a well-known junkyard upgrade. There's a writeup on Pirate somewhere. Draws a lot of current IIRC, and needs a relay.

Ford OEM electric fans are the best. They are made by Siemens. I run a Lincoln Mark VIII fan on my '91 mustang 302. Its the most powerful fan out there.
I will be putting a fan from a ford windstar in my cj. the windstar is a dual fan setup, i cut the shroud and used the larger of the two fans. fits on the 65/66 mustang radiator I am using perfectly. i just had to make 2 L brakets to mount the fan to the radiator.
The bearings on the OEM fans last 5 times as long and move more air than the junk you get from flexalite, or be cool, or black magic, or any other aftermarket supplier.
As with any electric fan, run it through a relay, 2 relays is perfered. And don't run it off a dash switch (you will forget it turn it on sooner or later and overheat the motor). and do not wire it to run whenever the engine is on. both of these points should be obvious, but you'd be amazed to see how some people wire them up. Use a thermostatic control to run and shutoff the fan at a certain temp.

I picked up a nice OE electric from a parted-out '87 Grand National. It fits in the stock CJ V6 radiator fins like it belongs there! (I've only sized it, not hooked up yet). Some minor bracket fab and it will be golden!

Yeah, a used OE is much better built. Good info on the Ford fans Linckeil!!

Anyone have a nice Setrab oil cooler for sale that fits just as nice ? 8)

I have 2 fans and no mechanical fan. I got the largest electric fans at the local auto store. Once you get them worknig together they cool real good. So good i had to install a thermostat so the engine temp will go over 100 degrees. I have had them for about 5 years. I do think about them going bad, i may get another to have as a spare. They are hooked to a switch so i can turn them on and off when going through water. And boy can you tell when you accidetnally turn the switch back on, the temp goes up.

    Thanks for the info

Scott's pics are cool and give me some good food for thought---

So you need to use a relay to avoid frying the dash switch!

I have an E- fan out of a '91 Buick LaSabre-- I may try it first.

I'd go for the direct switch too and just watch the gadge.

I had a Buick V6 in a VW van that I cooled with a mach Fan mounted on the rear of the van. There was a vortex behind the van that kept the radiator cool. That van was a blast! It out powered all the mini-vans of its time. I ran it for almost 200K miles --- then sold it to a biker who put the engine and transaxle in a harley chopped Trike.

When I put the radiator on the front of the V6 powered VW, the engine compartment got so hot that the gasoline boiled in the carb. and the Battery plastic melted. But with the fan mounted on the water pump the wind blew over engine and blew away the excessive heat.

SO does the engine compartment get too hot when cooling a Jeep with and E-FAN?

I use a pusher fan in front of the radiator to augment cooling. Thermostatically controlled and relayed. I am not sure of the brand. I bought it from "OLd Aire" products. The relative small frontal area of the radiator can make it hard to find one that fits. The 231 will tend to accumulate more heat than the 225 in my jeep-Maybe because of the turbo. The electric will drop the temp 10 - 15 degrees very quickly. It pulls lots of amps though.

not sure of who made my electric fan. came as a kit w/relay and temp sensor. coolant temp is adjustable, have it set somewhere around 198-202.

Tried to run just an elecric as a "pusher" on my 231. I did not have enough room between the radiator and water pump. It ran way too hot. I ended up using a mech flex fan and left the E-fan in case it gets too hot. Works much better this way.
