I think I want to add a compact sleeping area to the front of my car hauler.

Here is what I am starting with.

And here is a rough idea of what I want to do. It will be insulated and have AC/Heat that can either be run off shore power or genset.

The jeep sketch came out too big but this gives you a rough idea of what I am shooting for. The trailer weighs 1850 lbs. The Jeep comes in at 3500 lbs. empty. The trailer is rated at 7K lbs. So that gives me about 1600 lbs. to play with. I will probably have to carry my tools and other things in the pickup to keep the weight down on the trailer.

I am in no way worried about overloading my tow rig. :D

Hmm...could you find a sleeper cab from a Semi and use that as a base?

Was gonna say the same thing - years ago we put one on a goose neck horse trailer before the sleeper combos came out. Worked real well and saved weeks building it.

Possibly, I am just wondering how much I would have to mod a sleeper to get what I want.

This idea was inspired. I spent last weekend in a tent in 17* weather and ice. I was warm but this would be so much nicer at the end of the day.

Looks like you'll be losing some tongue weight. Be careful to keep the rear of your trailer from being too heavy.

Yeah, I need to make time to get some detailed meassurements on the actual trailer. Then have to think about weight balance.

I may have to go with a weight distribution hitch if I do this because the tongue could be very heavy.

It looks interesting. I would still tent it, but then again I am young and dumb still. I will admit though I can't camp without my airmattress anymore, guess I am getting old R)

I have been camping in every type of weather imaginable. It would be nice to have something where I don't have to spend an hour setting up camp. :D

Yes, i too have smoked the same crack, I was thinknig bout a larger trailer and getting a really cheap popup camper and bolting it down to the front of the trailer, it isnt a hard shelled camper but it woul work good and you can find pop ups for reaaal cheap. Thing is to have a pretty long trailer, right now, mine is the perfect size for the jeep and nothing else.

i did think about the slide in camper. And you can make a storage box under th efront to support the overhanging bunk on the camper. But just needs a large trailer. The Semi truck sleep section is a very cool idea. There is a company out there that actually makes trailer like this, but they are $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

You guys would be disappointed to know I just cut 5 ft off the jeep hauler I'm building (still has 19ft of deck space). It started out as a 27 ft camp trailer. Heres a pic of it at the present time. I'm about half way there!

Looks like a cool idea Hawk, but you wanna be really careful when figuring the front-back weight distribution. Ideally you want to have 10-15% minimum loaded trailer weight on the tongue to prevent trailer sway that can cause you to lose control of the whole bananna unexpectedly. AMHIK. After we rolled our 25' travel trailer, I went back and re-weighed everythign we had on board and I realized that we only had about 8% tongue weight, and it induced a fishtail tha was unrecoverable. The toll: A totalled brand-new 25' camper, and a fairly new quad-cab pickup that drove like a crab even after it had been 'fixed'.

I did the exact same thing you are doing with a 26' trailer about 2 years ago. I even did the outriggers with large angle just like you are. It turned out to be a very light trailer. Sadly, I sold it with my Jeep right after I finished it.

As far as the sleeper idea, I would definitely find a used sleeper box and start from there. Look around some of the gravel and dirt hauling companies in your area. They will often take an over the road tractor, remove the sleeper, and use it for a local dump truck or tractor. A small 12 volt heater would keep you plenty warm on the cold nights. They are also pretty light and lockable.

Maybe the front of an abandoned box or motorcycle trailer, and make a floor and aft bulkhead to fit.
