Just upgraded to a 12SI/100 amp alternator and debating the merits of one/three wire set-ups..Good article below regarding this topic.

BTW, I got the one wire but I am tempted to exchange for the standard three wire for reasons mentioned.

I have a three wire on my jeep and have not found the right combination for the idiot lite. to must resistance it works all the time, to little resistance and it won't work. Right now it won't work on start up at idel, need to rev the engine to get it to come on line. still searching for the answer. I am looking to replace it with a welder.

 

I also replaced my Gen. with the 3 wire Alt. Real easy to do and I used the original mounting brackets ,with alittle finse it will work . My only problem was getting a double pulley so that I could use my snowplow pump. Also make sure to use a Volt gauge and not an amp gauge as it will not give you a correct reading {80 Amp Alt } on a 60 amp gauge

 

I've used one-wire Delcos in the past on two different railroad speeders. Drove a ton of lights, horns, and whatnot on each one and never had a problem. They did need to be revved up good before they began charging though. Oh yeah, on the Fairmont two-stroke they'll charge when the engine is running in either direction!
